General Terminus Quay

My Dad picked me up the book "the herald book of the clyde" at a jumble sale over the weekend and since opening it I have been fascinated by this picture of central terminus quay;
Image
I obviously realise that a lot of the clyde has changed completely but to see such a large site vanish is amazing.
Looking back at pictures I have taken the only trace I can find is the ramp chains and pier for the ferry slip on the right of this picture;
Image

Does anybody have more pictures of the site either during operation or during demolition?
Is there any evidence remaining?
Am I right in thinking the railway line is the one you can see evidence of from Seaward street as you pass under the M8?

Like I say, this place to me is fascinating so any more info would be great.

Dave.

Dave I worked there in the late 70s. It was called General Terminus Mavisbank Quay. The three cranes were used to unload Iron ore from the ships, the ore was dropped in a hopper then transferred through a series of conveyor belts to be loaded onto the trains for Ravenscraig.
I would imagine that Brittish Steel Corporation would have something on their site about it.
Hope that gives you a start

John

Dave, if you do a search for General Terminus you will come up with quite a lot of posts on that topic and if you trawl through them you should find quite a few interesting snippets of information. I'm sure the b&w picture has been posted before and I seem to remember also there is a picture of the demolition somewhere [possibly posted by Apollo?].

The section of railway cutting still in existence along part of Seaward Street is indeed a remnant of the rail link with the General Terminus.

Cool.
Glasgowken, that pic helps me a lot with the location. I had planned to go and take some pics today but ended up fixing a mates van over the phone.
I hope to get down there tomorrow.

No bother. I still mind the Daily Record from the day after the detonation, i'm pretty sure it was a full colour aerial view showing the wreckage.

I went down to the location of the terminus today to see if I could find any trace of what was once there and I'll tell you what, there's not a lot.

Using the original picture I have added the points where I have taken the pictures which follow.
Image

From position 1 looking down river, all that seems to have survived is the ferry pier and the bollards allthough it would be interesting to see if the rails for the crane survive under the slabs. (some midnight pick-axe action maybe :twisted: )
Image

At position 2 the bridge which carried paisley road west over the railway can still be seen from the terminal side;
Image

But from position 3 on the other side of Paisley road west there is no trace other than the wall on the other side of the road;
Image

Looking the other way from Paisley road west you can see the path of the railway lines as they ran parallel to Seaward street;
Image

And at the far end of this road where Seaward street passes under the M8 there are the remains of another bridge which looks like it has been converted into storage units;
Image
Image

And again from the other side there is pretty much no evidence that there was ever a bridge there;
Image

I need to go back down at some point and find somewhere better to park the car so that I can ignore all the private land signsand get down to the river bank but it dosnt look like I would find anything.

Good photies, I always wondered why this undercut was here. The lock ups are a joiners workshop.

Thought this may be of interest BT. Not sure of the date, it's sometime before WW2, obviously before the larger structure was built.

I seem to remember my dad using the area above to park his car when we went to the garden festival.

I always wondered why the under pass and railway tunnels were under there. obviously when they planned the Mway they considered that line still being there. Am I right in saying that leads up to where the railway yard is near haggs/pollokshields area ?

From what I can tell the line would have curved to the right after the tunell and joined the main line at Sheilds road depot.
