Has anybody got a picture of the Pigeon statue that used to be on West Princes Street.

It was stolen a couple of years ago, found, reinstalled and promptly hacksawed off again. Current whereabouts unknown. All that remains is the plinth and a pair of spindly brass feet...

<edit>
Found it:

BTW, not sure about that Billy statue - unless it's been moved.
It currently sits in a fenced-off grass patch down-from-and-opposite the Provand's Lordship.

It's been moved.

It was there last weekend. It originally stood outside the Tontine buildings in Trongate, then moved to the traffic island at Glasgow Cross, and is now exactly where the good reverend said. There is a rather interesting plaque in front of it, possibly the only monument in Scotland commemmorating the tercentenary of the so-called Glorious Revolution.

To build on the dedication of the statue of King Billy. It was a symbol of Glasgow's staunchly Presbyterian roots. William of Orange was viewed as the ultimate defender of the Protestant faith from the popery of James VII & II. In the 19th century, with the influx of Catholic immigrants it stood as a symbol of anti-catholicism for Glaswegians and around New Year they would gather round the statue to get pished.

It was moved in the 1930s (I think), after a period of fierce sectarianism (1920-30s), as it was felt no longer appropriate to have it in such a dominant position at Glasgow Cross.

I saw a few weeks ago that someone had draped a pink woollen poncho thing over Rank Bajin. Looked quite funny. I didint have my camera with me though.

As for the Dinosaur on University Ave. They seem to have painted the 'bandage' black to match in with the rest of the body.

You really do have to wonder what was on their mind when they commissioned that one...

I think this may be a Sheela-na-Gig, or at least a modern representation of the old Celtic icon. IE: It's a large stone vulva :)

Good news on that one actually - the university have finally admitted they are going to keep it permanently, and are getting a proper tail made of metal rather than fibreglass to stand up better to student attacks...

aye, from what some guy told us when i went there its a fertility symbol of some sort.. think there may have been a bit about it in the student guardian a couple of years ago but its unlikely to surface as i threw all the crap i had collected from then out a while ago..
