Nice vid, very dramatic.

A day off from work next week presents me with the opportunity to head out with my camera. Anything anyone wants me to capture?

Anyone able to do a past and present for this location.
It's part of the old Carlisle to Stirling road that goes over the cumbernauld railway line, just outside The Real Spice takeaway just off South Carbrain Road

Stirling Road, from where the pic is it went down to Luggiebank and onwards to Airdrie, it was the original A73.

See http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/2823168 for an 1981 view from the south.

That road was the A73 before the 'new' re-routed part (i.e. the dual carriageway section that starts just north of Riggend) of the existing A73 was constructed in the late 1960s/early 1970s (anyone got a better idea of the date?).

South of the railway bridge... the old road still exists between Lenziemill Road and Riggend, though the part between Lenziemill Road and Luggiebank is now a footpath rather than a road. The part between Luggiebank and Riggend remains in use though and its name (Stirling Road) is a bit of a giveaway as to its previous life as a main road.

North of the railway bridge... the old road is completely gone - it has been completely erased by the development of Cumbernauld.

As for the reason for the road being abandoned at the railway bridge, I think it's fairly easy to draw a sensible conclusion. There are probably two primary reasons: [1] As the popularity and use of vehicular traffic increased, the fairly small original road would have began to struggle with the volume/size of traffic; [2] As Cumbernauld developed, it would have been necessary to divert what was effectively a 'trunk' road away from the residential areas of the town - hence the requirement for the 'new' part of the A73.

Douglas Alexander has an unsurpassable collection of pre new town photos in his Flickr allbums.

Look at Stirling Road in 1956 HERE

and a view which includes the two storey building and bridge in question from 1958 HERE

Edit: add

A73 construction, 1967
