Great pictures!!!

Didn't know about the mine at Palacerigg.
Might need to check that out - assuming it's still there!?

Since the “HC” thread has been brought back to life....

The little bridge underneath Castlecary viaduct.
The one they thought might be Roman ( ::): ) but it turned out not to be so let's demolish it,
hmmm lets not!, oh stuff it pull it down!, errrm wait a minute it’s a remarkable example of
18th century engineering better not, oh can't decide!!

A few pics I took myself a month or so ago...

It's best viewed during the winter months when the trees n’ that are not as overgrown.
You can see much more detail then.
If you do want to see it, don't leave it too long coz they might pull it down soon - or they might not!

Councillor Tom Johnston used to be my history teacher at Cumbernauld High School circa 1989. Glad to see he's still active in the old preservation game.

I wrote a letter to the CN on this subject, it was published.

Unique place, a turnpike road bridge - the putlock, a canal built in the Hanoverian era, a railway bridge built by the Victorians and the A80 built in the post war era.

.....and within a quarter mile there's also the Antonine Wall, the remains of a Roman fort and a castle where Mary Queen of Scots once spent a few nights (and planted a tree).

Well there is Castle Cary and Castlecary I think, the legendary Hugo Millar springs to mind.

Found it!

I see what you mean about that tree 8O

Apparently it's Glencryan Fireclay Mine.

I couldn't hang about as there were millions of those big horrible flesh-eating flies!

Shame about the gate. I'll be back though! With a grinding wheel and some C4. :)

Will do! But next time I go up there I'll be packin' though........

Actually, I read this on another forum when I googled "old mine palacerigg"....
"i took a walk up to the mine last month ive known but this mine for years
but had not photograth it befor the mine has been sealed for 10+ years
i han been in befor this happend. there is a small opening at a near by farm.
all the outer building where knocked down years ago.
the mine is in Palacerigg Country Park near cumbernauld."

Just wonder if there's another way in there or whether I'm just misreading his bad English?

Hmmm?!

Have none of you people seen the Amityville Horror.....well this is indeed the Well to Hell. I would stay away from this Mine at all costs. Went up there once a long time ago and could hear a faint, distant scream coming from deep inside that place. the gate was actually open at the time and when i walked in for about 10 yards i heard a whispering, gentle, almost friendly voice say "get out" followed by a booming, echoing, deafening "GET OUT".

And the flies...the flies were everywhere.

Needless to say i ran like the wind.

::): ::): Very good Knightmare! Yes, it is a bit creepy! Both the film and the mine.

Wonder if I've found the (possible but unlikely) other entrance that guy (maybe) was talking about...

Image

Mine entrance I was at today circled in yellow.
Possible other entrance circled in red (near a now demolished farm).

Only one way to find out!

PS.
If nobody hears from me again can someone come looking?
I'm a bit feart now - thanks to Knightmare! 8O

There was a tramway up there which connected to the fireclay works on the main railway line. This tunnel would have been part of that mineral line.
