The Blind Asylum, Castle Street

A bit of a work-in-progress at the moment!

"The Blind Asylum in Castle Street. A clock was later installed in the circular space in the tower. Lower down, a niche in the tower holds a sculpture, Christ healing a blind boy, by Charles Grassby.

The Blind Asylum was founded in 1804, with the first building on Castle Street erected in 1828 by public subscription. A competition was held to design a replacement building in 1878. It was designed by William Landless in what is almost a pastiche of the Scots Baronial style and was completed in 1881 at a cost of £21,000. In 1934 it was purchased by the adjacent Glasgow Royal Infirmary, for conversion into an Out-patients' Department. The hexagonal tower and other parts of the old building stand derelict in 2004.

Blind people were traditionally among the poorest in society. A report of the Glasgow Asylum for the Blind in 1884 stated: "The Asylum devotes itself to two modes of assisting the blind: 1st: Educating the young in various branches, including first-rate musical tuition; 2nd: Teaching various trades and providing employment in the workshops." Board and lodging was provided, as well as education. Costs were covered by subscriptions, donations, bequests and the sale of articles such as brushes, baskets and bedding manufactured in the workshops."

Quoted from "The Glasgow Story".

I always think the Blind Asylum looked as though it was falling to bits.....still does. But they're obviously now doing some work on it. Also it looks like a large proportion of the building was demolished even before the GRI multi-story was built....probably unsafe.

I also like the high street photo's. I think i'd rather visit the shops in the 50's/60's than visit the ones there today to be honest :?

I wonder if there are any people who lived in those flats above the shops in the 60's, who still live there today?

I heard they were turning the Blind Asylum into flats! Bet they're mega bucks!
I'd like to do another Past-Present when the work is completed.
It always reminded me of Castle Dracula! Great looking building!

Dunno! They must have rebuilt a whole section of the street at some point though.

I'm sure everything in this picture is now gone but in some strange way it's all immediately recognisable.

From what I've read, the City Improvement Trust re-built the street in 1901 to a competition winning design by Burnet, Boston & Carruthers.

The CIT emblem can be seen on this photo:

Provand's Lordship, Castle Street

Provand's Lordship house was built in 1471 as part of St Nicholas's Hospital by Andrew Muirhead, Bishop of Glasgow.

St. Mungo Museum (on the right) was only opened in 1993. Looks much older than that!
