But the first picture is a lot older than 1940! Something like 1904 would seem more accurate to me. Was this a typo?

You're probably right. I always had my doubts about that date. Difficult to tell exactly though.

Judging by the tram it was taken sometime around the turn of the century or just after, 1904 would be about right.
Great pics btw :)

I have often wondered what is in the railings in the past picture. Is it steps down to a public toilet, similar to St. Vincent Street at Buchanan Street? If so they may still be down there. Spooky stuff!!

As far as I am aware the lines come from the old tram depot on south street heading under the railway towards Dumbarton road. There is a photo showing a tram off the rails at the intersection at Dumbarton road at the Scotstoun Emporium its featured in a book I have of old Scotstoun and Whiteinch if I can find it I will dig it out.

Just to get us all even more off topic, I've found a map with lots of railway and tram lines in and around South Street.

Image

Used to know this part of the planet, but I wouldn't want to comment on the old stations and docks.

The tram lines ran down Scotstoun Street and went along South Street as far as Smith Street where they came to an abrupt halt.

Don't ask me why!! :?

In the absence of tram wires may I suggest that it is a rail line leading to Scotstoun Good yards as shown in the above map.

The tram came off the line at Primrose Street.

"I before E, except after C" works in most cases but there are exceptions.
