HG Subway Visit

A HG visit Under the Clyde Sunday 4th of December 2006.

With thanks to Ron Culley for organising the tour and to Jim Douglas and Niel OF SPT

We were granted access and walked from Govan to Partick. Along the track /tunnel power was off so no causality’s.
A word of warning folks we were fully briefed and went through a Health and Safety induction before hand, along with security clearance.
The track is live and our section was switch off for our visit.
Remember don’t trespass on the line cause you will either die, damage one of those lovely Orange carriages or both

Enjoy the images

Aye, fantastic trip folks, many thanks to the organisers and for the invite!

Good to put a face (and a real name) to so many I hadn't met before too, just a pity the situation wasn't really conducive to "get to know you better" chat!

Anyways, here's the pick of my collection of scrawny shots, with some words of explanation for those of you unlucky enough not to be there...

Image
Inside the depot where the trains sleep for the night, am I right in remembering that this was the old building where the lifting pit used to be?

Image
Inside the workshops, fairly large area with this section looking to be where the bodies are lifted and the spare bits and pieces are kept.

Image
Nice wee touch of the old on the wall of the workshops!

Image
The other part of the workshops with the inspection pits.

Image
Into the tunnels at last! This being a section that goes under a river, the construction method used cast iron sections.

Image
All sorts of unusual creatures lurking down there!

Image
Merkland St as it was....

Image
And Merkland St now...

Image
Quite an eventful wee stretch of track, this bit shows the repaired bomb damage from the Second World War. I'll scan and post a contemporary pic of the damage when I get a chance.

Image
The home stretch.

Image
Nearly there...

Image
Govan Station, from a view point I hope to never see during normal operational hours...

Am I the only one that thought our guide (Neil?) looked a bit like Steve Coogans
swimming pool attendant from 'The Day Today?'

Thankfully he wasn't as dull as Coogans character.

Lucky indeed! I'd love to see MErkland street. I've never been able to work out where the entrance to the station is/was. Can anyone enlighten me?
Google map?

Wow!

Wish I could've been there. I worked on the subway tracks a few years ago in the tunnel junction at Govan. Quite an experience. Would have loved to walked those lines again. Will this HG event be happening again?
