I had rather hoped the bells would have found a new life in a skip by now. They look so dated. But not in a festive fun kitch way... just ... tired.

All in all though, I suppose it keeps costs down. Im just remebering now what I really dislike about christmas in teh square. That bloody ice rink that gets boarded off creating a big black inpenetrable blockade. Well i suppose unless you shell out to go skating. Which i dont do since i partially severed my sisters fingers. Anyway, if thats going to be a feature again, what about encouraging some festive graffiti art on the boards so it doesnt look like its just been dumped there.

Now that is a good idea. Brighten the place up a bit as its a bit of a dark hole with the horrid boards. All well n good encouraging people into the square but its not the Rockefeller Center is it, and its full of neds which surely discourages those of us who fancy a wee bratwurst?

How about getting rid of that and expanding the market, maybe a wee cafe or two more, some music, plays or something.

and yes ive not been on the rink, i can skate but who wants to pay money to be harrassed by scumballs in shellsuits!

Edit - just looked at the prices in NYC for ice skating, ripped off again. Skate in the majesty of central park for $9.50 for the day , yes day!

I was also hoping that those stupid bells would be a thing of the past but alas its not to be. I may well be accused of looking back with rose tinted glasses but as a child, I clearly recall a wonderful scene at George Sq with all the illuminations. I vividly recall the lights along the length of Sauchiehall, Buchanan and Argyle Streets and the creme de la creme was of course the Square.

Of course the shops don't sponsor the lights now so bang goes the full length of Sauchiehall St and the Square is in my humble opinion a poor shadow of its former self. A well that's life, that's progress....

Testing the lights in preparation for Sundays "Big Turn On"

At least they've spared Sir Walter the indignity of that bow tie this year!

:D I rather liked the bow tie... it's the sort of pleasingly irreverent thing that gives the city it's appeal....

Rather like the cone on the head of the statue of Wellington. I was once asked (by an American broadcaster) to re-shoot a sequence around the area of the G.O.M.A because Wellington wasn't wearing his 'traditional' garb.....

I know - he's still the guilty party though and managed to melt the leather on my sofa the last time he was here (and I mean that in a non risque way :)) - more to do with the residues on his overalls etching a pattern :)

He's also responsible for a few lesser recognised 'projects' here and there :)

Not quite civic christmas decorations (unless the NHS are paying for the lights on the crane) but it tickled my fancy so I thought I'd post them:

Bigger versions here:

It is the crane being used to build the New Victoria Hospital, Southside. Should've said that at the start probably.

My route to work is taking me through Rutherglen in the morning just now so I'll try and grab a few piccies of their lights.
