Is there any truth in the story that the reason Edinburgh's are different is because they rejected the "Tardis" style because it wasn't in keeping with the architecture of the city?

There were some people working on the one at the Botanics yesterday

The inside was being given a fresh white coat of paint. Surely the Glasgow ones are too small to be used for coffee shops, though?

Coffee

Postby nodrog » Mon May 03, 2004 12:44 pm

Thanks to Gary for plugging my page of photos of the boxes further up the thread!

On the subject of police boxes, I came across a nice wee history of them here:

http://www.eee.strath.ac.uk/r.w.stewart/boxes.pdf

It mentions a further 2 boxes still in private ownership, and one held by Strathclyde Uni that they were planning on installing somewhere on campus. This was a couple of years ago however, and I don't know if they still plan on doing this or not.

Nice to see the Byres Rd one getting a new lick of paint though- it was getting very tatty. I'm unclear who actually owns the boxes now.

As for the planning application, this was to turn the box near the Cathedral into a coffee kiosk called 'Coppuchino'.
Grounds for objecting to the planning application on the name alone!

The plans showed that when the kiosk was open, it would effectively have the door on the right hand side open, with a tiny counter. Doesn't look like it would be much fun to work in!

<Thread bump>

Interesting planning application in today's Evening Times:

04/01463/DC
Site Adjacent to 163 Argyle Street G2
Erection of police box

Wonder where this one is coming from - the restoration of the one in the Transport museum didnt look nearly finished last time i was in.

I think 163 Argyle St is about St Enoch square area, but I could be wrong...
think i'll go have a nosey at the application, see if there are any more details.

Police Boxes

Postby Alastair » Sun May 23, 2004 12:00 am

Hi Folks,
The planning application to site a police box at 163 Argyle Street, Glasgow, is in fact by Strathclyde Police for a new style police box filled with hi-tech equipment to communicate with their Pitt St. HQ.
I understand it will be in a stainless steel finish with a touch-screen system for reporting minor crimes etc.
I can get more details if anyone is interested.
Regards
Alastair

Interesting to learn about the early iron boxes in Glasgow - anyone know who made them - I assume they are all lost. I always thought it was weird that Glasgow had more foundries than any other UK city but the y had concrete boxes, Edinburgh had CI ones made at Saracen and Carron.

A friend of mine has been asked to make new 'old' CI ones for using as kiosks - any takers.....?

Police Boxes

Postby Alastair » Mon Jun 07, 2004 11:27 pm

Hi David,
As far as I know, the cast iron hexagonal boxes, used as Police Signal Boxes in 1891, were made at McFarlane's Iron Works in Glasgow. They were the boxes that were actually exported to Paris as toilets.
Hope this helps.

If anyone's interested, the council passed the planning application today to convert the Cathedral St police box into a coffee kiosk called 'Coppuccino'...

...and I am slightly cross that they entirely misrepresented my objections in the report!
