Glasgow's disappearing Weather Vanes

Until I started looking I thought there'd be weather vanes sprouting from every steeple, turret and apex in Glasgow, but what I saw was lots of baldy pinnacles where vanes had no doubt once been, but were alas, no longer. So here goes what I hope will be at least a good attempt to capture the last of these magnificent little aeriel masterpieces of art, practicality and lore.

Two to start with...

1) Above Charing Cross Mansions.

2) The spires and vanes of the Uni from across Kelvingrove Park.

Very nice indeed :D The steeple of the old Merchants House on Briggait, the steeple being all that remains of the building, still has its vane but i don't have a pic to do it justice.

So here are some more:

Brilliant pics all. And that one on Strathbungo Church is a true traditional weather-cock too. I'm sure there must be a lot of tradition associated with vane design just waiting to be googled.

Does anybody grease the pivots so that they revolve freely? They always seem to be ponting towards different quarters whenever they're close enough to make a comparison.

As to the question of altitude I'm wondering if it'd be possible to float one's camera up on a kind of mini hot air balloon (wind permitting) with some basic remote-control shutter release.

Where did you take that one from Foss? Doesn't look like a major zoom (from my extreme amateur point of view).

Beautiful. And no 'almost' about it.

This thread sums up pretty much what I think of Glasgows architecture now. Shitehole at ground level but when you look up there's some amazing stuff there. Liverpool's the same!

There's a nice vane at Shawland X I noticed the other day that Iwould never have seen if it wasn't for HG making me pay a bit more attention to things about me.

It's the same for the Glasgow coat of arms I'm looking up everywhere I go now to find it :)...Jim

Is that the one opposite the 'green pyramid' church, Mac?

That's the one Josef. It's "The Arthouse" now, I posted some more pics in the Glasgow City Shots thread.

Here ... That wasn't you looking having a quick ciggie at the front door and looking surlyly at me when I took the photos today was it?
