My pics aren't the best, as the light was kinda going and people kept tutting at me when I was looking up and getting in their way!

A small but important correction they were not people but "westenders". Although very few of them can track their ancestry back to before BBC Scotland they developed the concept of local shops, pubs, public parks for local people.

They have also initiated a grading system as to how west end you are. thus grade G12 is the most local, G11 need to move uphill a bit and G15 really belongs in Clydebank.

Didn't Blairdardie folk complain about coming under the G15 Drumchapel postcode ? ::):
They wanted to be counted under the Knightswood postcode I believe. (I live in Blairdardie btw  )

I'm G20 (Maryhill  ) all because I live on the wrong side on the Kelvin. I should be G12 dammit!

One of my friends, when first looking for flats to rent used to say - I can't live there, it's G11 - that's Partick. Guess where he lives now.

I've always liked Albany Mansions with their wee dark and richly detailed ground floor entrances, some lovely old wood and glass there. In fact, it's almost hard to believe that you're right in the heart of the city centre standing outside there.

It was also the home of Jet Li and Morgan Freeman in the film Unleashed, although I suspect the interiors were a studio set.

Somewhere in a book of Old Partick pics it says there was a five bob side and a half crown side to Dumbarton Road, refering to what the coal man charged for a bag. Same same G11/G12.
I hope my old departed socialist journeymen appreciate me choosing a G11 residence when I returned to my native city even though my new drinking buddies say I'm in the yuppie flats. :D

Anyone remember a70s cafe at Caledonian Mansions (Kelvinbri

I used to live in the human rabbit warren known as Caledonian Mansions in the late 70s. It's the big building next to the Kelvin Bridge on Gt Western Road. There was a nondescript wee cafe among the shops below where I often ate.

I started a thread in another place about today being the 30th anniversary of Kate Bush's 'Wuthering Heights' getting to number 1 in the charts, and how I first heard it while in this wee cafe in 1978.

Anyways, what began as a Kate Bush appreciation and 'can it really be 30 years?' thread has turned in to a 'whit wee cafe?' thread. No one remembers it. Hardly surprising. It had nothing much going for it except that it was cheap and just doon the stairs. If it had a name, I never knew what it was. Just 'the cafe'.

Here's a link to the shops there in 1974. The first shop is a chippie (Philadelphia?'). The black shop is a hairdresser's. But I don't recognise anything else there. I'm seriously starting to wonder if I've got 'false memory syndrome' . Does anyone else remember a cafe here? Any ideas when it closed or what it's name was?

What a wonderful building they don't build them like that anymore. A new one would be in awful concrete or steel/aluminum glass?
