by little lane
I agree with Socceroo, most buildings look better before they were cleaned, they lose a lot of their character when the soot and grime comes off.
I've got a picture of the Art Galleries somewhere at home, pre the cleaning, and I just think it looks so much beter than it does today.
I'll have a look and try and find it, and scan it on here.

Built on the site of an old ironstone pit, see map of 1860. Hope this won't lead to subsidence !!

This emblem was on the building too... (I was going to keep it for a "where am I", but what the heck!)

How much to fix the letters?! Honestly...

Interestingly, they appear to be blonde sandstone at the back (I went down a lane, but thought it looked a bit suss to be taking pics of people's bedroom windows!).

SR&S huh... curios. That's gonna bug me now!

Regarding the rear of St Georges Mansions being of blonde sandstone, you'll see this in a lot of tenements (mine for example heh) and its simply down to a matter of economy. The imported pink sandstone is of better quality than the local blonde sandstone (the quarries for which would be almost completely exhausted by 1902) and therefore more expensive and so it was more cost effective to use the local guff for the bits not intended for public consumption :)

Thanks for populating this thread with some images btw - mucho appreciato!

agreed, superb pics.

Some questions

Does someone have access to:

a) the clock
b) the balcony at the top of the high tower

i have also heard that CX Mansions have some sort of strange garden setup at the back?

I got Along Great Western Road from my dad for my Christmas and had something confirmed which I'd completely forgotten about...

After I went to go and photograph the Charing Cross and St George's Cross Mansions, I walked up to Kelvinbridge cos I had a notion that the building over the bridge from the subway (where Roots and Fruits and Felix and Oscar are) was also a "mansions". I couldn't see any signs on the building to confirm this, so I let it be.

Flicking through AGWR I found the following:
Miller* also designed the richly-detailed Caledonian Mansions alongside Kelvinbridge station. The mansions were not, as is popularly believed, built as an annexe to the Caledonian's Central Hotel. Recent research in the railway company's archives shows that the shops and the flats above were built purely for rental income.

*James Miller, of Botanics, Kelvinbridge, and Wemyss Bay stations fame.

My pics aren't the best, as the light was kinda going and people kept tutting at me when I was looking up and getting in their way! I'm going to go back and take some better ones, the back of the building was nice too.

My mum stayed there when she was a student. Can't believe they weren't mentioned earlier. I love the building.

Albany Mansions just round the corner from Charing X Mansions on Renfrew Street.
