Cracking photos. (I was investigating the not-M74-yet ramps on the Live Maps thing just last night.)
Any ideas what these are though?

There was a wee jungle of them on the Jan 2 walk and I was most confused. What are they for?

looks like they're driven concrete piles
http://www.fps.org.uk/pilinginfo/drivenpiling.php
they will be trimmed to the correct level and transfer the load from whatever is going on top of them, road or bridge or whatever, through soft ground to firm natural ground.
the firm ground may be really deep, i worked on sites where piles have been driven 36m underground.

They're adjacent to the junction of Quay Road and Glasgow Road and will carry the main carriageway of the M74 over Glasgow Road from what I can see.

That's a 120ft in old money. I believe there are piles that deep under the M5 where it crosses the Somerset Levels near Highbridge.

Subway damage halts motorway work

Postby fullfatmilk » Fri Mar 13, 2009 8:18 pm

Saw this story on the bbc site earlier today:

Work on a section of the M74 extension will not restart until engineers are satisfied there will be no damage to Glasgow's subway system.

Piling work is suspected to have caused cracks in some subway tunnels last week - disrupting the network.

Subway operator Strathclyde Partnership for Transport (SPT) will not "consent" to more piling work until it is satisfied more problems will not arise.

Same piles, but seen from the top of a bus:

Yeah, there are - think they're going to whack some geotextile down on top of these eventually. I did a summer placement this year (undergraduate studying civils at glasgow atm) and designed a few of these piled embankments. If memory serves, I think bedrock was about 40m deep in some places along the m74 - around the farmeloan and rutherglen overbridges I think? Not sure about how deep it was at the Port Eglington Viaduct, though. I'm assuming this is where the photo was!
