I imagine he'd have been carted off to the gulag if he'd insisted on painting like that in the Soviet Union in 1950, rather than in "conservative" Glasgow.

Guff like this was what "the people" demanded instead.

Grey's painting was in a more "Mexican" style (via German expressionism), rather than Russian.

Theres one on the side of the houses when you turn right into Provanmill / Blackhill from Royston Road, its a beauty too and if memory serves its like a stained glass window through which you can see old orange corporation buses. I loved it because it seems to encapsulate a portion in time; the hopes, dreams and outlooks of a community.

There used to be one on the side of the houses at the end of Endrick Street.

My favourite one is still the one in the Barras with the two arches and the steepl / skyline beyond. This says something to me, although I have no idea what it is but know its profound.

Palacerigg Country Park

Postby onyirtodd » Thu May 18, 2006 8:44 pm

Does anyone have a photo of Alasdair Gray's mural in the visitor's centre at Palacerigg Country Park?

I'd be very grateful if you'd share it here.

TIA,

Onny

Yes it shall. We have even managed to get past the first few hurdles with Glasgow City Council, despite their best endeavours to trip up a sixty year old city based Cultural Society. :?

I will certainly keep you posted.

Anything new?

A bit nearer to home in the land of many murals.

Derry taken from a bus.

Image

Although not strictly speaking a mural, this is painted on the gable end of a row of cottages that are long gone as you enter the Bogside.

Excellent pics. - Oh, cheesemonster - was in Berlin there 4 years ago - pretty sure it was the same site although the soccer mural wasn't there. At bars nearby (brother-in-law works in Berlin) far from there being any hassle, we were always inundated with people wanting to speak 'english' with us because they were intrigued by the different accents from Renfrew (me) and Fife.

Prestonpans is trying to become a "mural town"... and it does appear to have some pretty cool murals on show, I may even be tempted to join the estimated annual 25,000 others!

Can we have more in Glasgow please!?

I like this one

Image

Taking 6 weeks to complete - this mural is situated on the outside wall of Scotmid in the car park just off Prestonpans beach. Tom worked from an old photo of the Co-Op circa 1910, which shows the staff posing outside the shop. Although the shop in the photo is no longer there, it was situated right next door to the site of the mural.

Given Glasgow's lost buildings... maybe this could be a useful approach to bringing back some character!!!

the SSP Building in Stanley Street. I was not sure if it should have gone in the garffiti thread.
(apology for the pic - still trying to work out how the camera/photo shop work.)
