On inspection, it's distinctly heavier in design at the bottom; the first clue. The decorative motifs employed in the casting are quite clearly the right way round: The trefoil frieze along the top are 1 above 2, the five-petalled rose forms a pentagram, next are the bell flower garlands (which do look a wee bit like they're upside down... but they're not :wink: ), notice the collar with the volutes scrolling downwards with more bell flowers garlands hanging from them and forming a mouchette around a scallop shell.

Case closed methinks ::): :D ::): :D ::):

Yep, I think that's one rumur well and truly nailed. I can sleep easy now...

The Albert Bridge, in a sad state of neglect.
Notice the cast iron railings along the bottom right-hand side of the picture. These are the originals which were removed
and refurbished and have come up smashin I have to say :wink: I was talking to one of the "workies" the other day and he
was ever so proud ::):

Ironwork

Postby David M » Wed May 05, 2004 12:46 pm

The railings were made by George Smith and Co's Sun Foundry which was based in Kennedy Street. I think the work is being done by Heritage Engineering - a Glasgow firm who do windmills, watermills, locomotives and ironwork all over the world !

David, do you know anything about the albert Bridge being refurbished? For a good while there was a newly cast section of the bridge railings padlocked to the bridge at the northern end.

I havent heard anything personally but they are doing a lot of work down there at the moment with a new fence round the Green and the refurbishment of the railings on the south side.

I think the plan is to refurbish the bridge at some point.

Useless information - the Albert heads are cast iron but were originallt 'bronzed' - must have looked quite impressive.

This might be of interest to some, and an absolute bargain at £6, it is the 6th Edition of MacFarlanes castings catalogues, beautifully illustrated over two volumes in a rather handsome box set. They show everything from drain pipes to entire buildings

Histpric Scotland
Technical Reference Series Vol 1 & 2: MacFarlane's Castings - Saracen Foundry, Glasgow

Image

This volume is the first of a number of Technical Reference books to be produced by the Technical Conservation Group and celebrates the legacy of one of Scotland’s most successful and internationally renowned 19th Century industrial firms, Walter MacFarlane & Co’s Saracen Foundry. There are very few original catalogues of Walter MacFarlane and Co left in general circulation, yet their ironwork is common. This publication is intended to act as a technical reference for those involved in the conservation of existing ironwork, or assisting in the design of replacement items.

Right, I've been poking around these forums for yonks and still it surprises me with a gem or two...

This railing type ---
Image
(From p1 by our illustrious founder and high commander)

is the same type as ---
Image
(From a Crusty Husk)

note the circular endings at the bottom to the railing to extent the pattern to cope with the steps...

Yet in My picture of the 'same' design the circles have become artistic squigles

This is interesting and this thread will be updated by me next time I'm in Glasgow

Mr Sam OUT
Hmmm I wonder what happens if i press that lever.... Ahh It operates that shiny new plug socket!

I like this one best, at first I thought it had something to do with horse racing in the area then I realised that the horses were pulling the barges & that their reflections were shown in the water. Why no riders in the reflection though?
