Think I may have found out the reason for this. Some sort of protest action group against the proliferation cable tv/fibre broadband cabinets that are springing up like, you guessed it, mushrooms.

I can sympathise with that. There are plenty of old boxes still around from the days when they put Glasgow's coat of arms on them >> and other embellishments to make them look as attractive as a box can be. They're evidently built to last. Everything else needs planning permission so I don't see why they couldn't make the effort to make them look like part of the scenery.

Couple of weeks ago, various bits of Motherwell were covered in these mushrooms.
Not just cable cabinets, but bus shelters, underpasses and some buildings.
and I rose up, and knew that I was tired, and continued my journey

Don't know if this has been done before. Google Maps list it as Cleveland Lane. Basically, it's at the back of the Bon Accord pub on North Street, at the end of Dorest Street.

just as an aside - Google maps list the RDA @ Sandyflat at completely the opposite end of Caldercruit Road than it actually is, despite showing it in glorious technicolour on the Satellite image!!

Sorry.

Carry on.

I think that's still Dorset Street. Cleveland Lane is where the Bon Accord and West Coast Harley back doors are located and runs between Kent Rd and the Dalian House car park.
I hear the people sing.
