Good news for the Bandstand at long last. :D

The Bandstand at Kelvingrove Park will receive £245,000.

Built in 1924 and designed by James Millar, over the decades it has been a popular location for outdoor music until it fell into disrepair in the 90s.

It has been the venue for many musical events from military bands to concerts by the likes of Belle & Sebastian, Franz Ferdinand, and Eddi Reader,

Anne McChlery, director of the Glasgow building preservation trust, said she hoped the building would be transformed in time for the 2014 Commonwealth games : "In the current economic climate, funding for projects such as this is under pressure, so this timely award gives this project marvellous added momentum."

The refurb is expected to cost between £1.3 and £1.5 million. It's a great start but there's a long way to go.

Planning in for Kelvingrove Bandstand, well over due and well done GBPT for undertaking this project and hoping to complete for 2014. :)

12/01831/DC | Extension and repair of bandstand and amphitheatre, including associated external alterations, new seating to terraces and improved access arrangements. | Band Stand And Amphitheatre Kelvingrove Park Kelvin Way Glasgow

The aim is to complete the works ahead of the Commonwealth Games in 2014. Discussions are underway regarding the possibility of the Bandstand holding medal ceremonies for the nearby bowling events and other cultural ac-tivities during the Games.
It is envisaged, once restored, the venue will be used for existing events in Kelvingrove Park such as Glasgow Mela and the West End Festi-val and other community events, thereby promoting the notion of Glasgow as a year round festival city.

Key Milestones

(subject to outcomes of funding applications)

  • Design Development (RIBA Stage D): August 2012
  • Statutory consents submitted: Autumn 2012
  • Tender issue: Feb. 2013

There was an interesting discussion on Today on Thursday re Big Lottery funding for public parks/ bandstands/ fountains etc. I got the impression it didn't apply to Scotland but that may have been the Salford Quay effect.

Plans are under way to bring the Kelvingrove Park bandstand and amphitheatre back into public use.

The project to raise the £1.8million cost of the plan has been boosted by a £585,000 grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund.

Contextual targeting label: Finance

A planning applica-tion has been lodged and the work could begin as early as next year.

The bandstand, the only one of its kind in the city, was built in 1924 and at one time regularly attracted crowds of 7000 people. It closed in the 1990s.
