Door is left open for last-minute attempts to restore Carrick

The historic clipper the Carrick has been given a stay of execution and could yet be saved if a viable restoration package is proposed.

Power to break up the vessel has been granted and a series of meetings is planned to ensure it is done properly, with homes found for specific parts of the ship.

However, officials from the Scottish Maritime Museum and Historic Scotland met other interested parties yesterday and the door was left open for any viable restoration attempt involving the Carrick

Jessica Beverly of the Cutty Sark Trust, set up to save and maintain the Grade 1 listed attraction in south-east London which was badly damaged by fire last week, said she hoped the Carrick could still be saved. The Carrick, like the Cutty Sark, combines a cast iron frame with a wooden hull.

"The Carrick is definitely worth saving," she said. "The response we have had in relation to the Cutty Sark shows there is overwhelming enthusiasm for keeping our maritime heritage."

OT, but interesting wee fact. The Romans built the colluseum with only manpower, including quarrying the stone, quicker than we built the parliment with all our modern machines.

Just shows you eh!

I see now that the puffer used in the recent series of "The Vital Spark" is in danger of being broken up too.
Jings! We are a maritime nation FFS and this is the last of the Clyde puffers! What's going on here? I thought these projects (the Carrick, the Spark) were what the tax on the poor (oops, meant to write Lottery) was for?

There should be a realisation as to what is important to people when it comes to museums. As was said before the country seems to have little trouble in forking out millions on modern paintings and "art" if it wants them.

I hope the wearsiders get the ship, take it home to the place it was built. The londoners can send us the Cutty Sark as compensation.

I guess it shows what's imporatant to some folk when one of Damien Hirst’s crappy pieces has just sold for £9.6 million, and the Carrick struggles to raise a fraction of that

Completely different thing - its not about importance, art of that kind is typically bought as investment and will continue to grow in value. Old ships dont really do that - sadly :(
