Smokers

Postby Dexter St. Clair » Thu Oct 19, 2006 12:55 am

If there is anybody on here from a WoSIC background they may recall the parish priest announcing a smoker to be held in the parish hall. They were men only and involved alcohol, songs not suitable for the ears of the ladies and maybe a showing of the 7-1 game later replaced by a game from 1967.

OK, Dex, give up. Wosic? The last letter is a 50/50 choice, but have no idea what the rest could stand for.

West Of Scotland Irish Catholic, I would imagine.

I remember when I was on the buses in the Glasgow Corporation Transport days occasionally smokers would be organised along the lines described by Dexter, although personally I never attended one. It was mostly the older guys who went along to these.

Yes Dex, I recall such anouncements. More recently though, Bowling Clubs and the like still have "Smoker Evenings" (two Strippers & a Comedian) usualy.

The Glasgow University Union still carry on the tradition of a 'smoker'.

The Monday before their annual end of term christmas event, Daft Friday, the building is closed down to members other than those on the decorating committee in order to preserve the secret theme until the Friday evening (and for certain Health and Safety issues). Before the closing down, however, members (predominantly male, however a few ladies have snuck in in recent years) are invited to the Beer Bar for an evening with plenty of booze, very politically incorrect GUU songs and the opportunity to throw a pint of long gone-off beer over the president whilst singing "The president of the Union is a dirty f***ing b*****d!". The then sodden president is usually stripped to the underpants, tied to a trolley and in days gone by, abandoned in Kelvingrove Park. Now in mercifully slightly more civilised days, he is usually dumped outside the QM, where we give him a shower, some clean clothes and usually get him stociously drunk.

Terrible behaviour, mind ;)

I had the first ever copy of The Scottish Daily News in my sock drawer for years until my mum threw it out. There used to be a cracking Jeff Hawke strip by Sidney Jordan. I remember it had got to the issue where Moratorro - the evil from beyond space - was approaching Earth, when the paper folded (!) and I never found out what happened next.

I got the Scottish Daily News on my way to work in the morning and use to cut out some of the cartoons. I should still have some of them somewhere. When I find them I will scan and post up what I find.
