To complement Alex's picture of John Elder which started off this thread, here are a couple of pics of his missus, Isabella Elder [looking somewhat bedraggled on a wet Friday afternoon and so was I]. A formidable and public spirited woman she took over the helm at Fairfields after her husband died and made many endowments in the Govan area [and beyond], notably Elder Park itself as well as the Elder Park Library.

You've got to love the older generation and their bravery. We're all just a big bunch of pussies now.

Apologies for going a bit off thread but your comments reminded me of this photo of the Red Road flats being built.

Dr Joan McAlpine wrote a book about Isabella Elder - 'The Lady of Claremont House' and is giving an illustrated talk on the subject to the Old Glasgow Club on Thursday 13th April at Adelaide's, Bath Street at 7.30 pm. Charge for visitors is £3.00.

"The Black Man" is what the William Pearce statue is known as locally, because of the discolouration of the bronze. But he looks more like a Green Man to me.

Hi John

Thanks. Very interesting story.

Hi viceroy

Any more details about this statue? I got some strange looks when I took this photo on Saturday.
