The Cardonald Cemetery Memorial Cross
Image

There are a few War Graves here mostly of seamen who died during WWII.

I know this isn't Glasgow but it is a fantastic memorial.

You beat me to it Alex because Cardonald Cemetery was to be my next port of call today. I went up there anyway.

These are the British graves, mostly of seamen as you say.

On the other side are Polish graves

Except for 2 Dutchmen - D. van der Harst on the left was a seaman in the Royal Dutch Navy. A. Beenen on the right was a member of the Dutch Forces in Britain. Note that he died after the war had ended.

Image

There were many women in the armed forces and a not inconsiderable number of them made the ultimate sacrifice, yet how often do you see one of their graves? Perhaps this one could act as a symbol for them all.

Image

Also in Cardonald Cemetery, a memorial erected by the Missions to Seamen over their burial ground for men from the Merchant Marine who were killed during the war.

Image

There are a number of other war graves scattered throughout the cemetery. All WWII I think, as far as I know Cardonald Cemetery wasn't laid out until around 1930.

Finally, the war memorial just inside the gates at Craigton Cemetery.

Well done Viceroy

Sorry I beat you to the Cardonald Cross. I also got a few shots of the graves. I was going to stop at Craigton but thought I would leave it for an other day so you beat me to that one.

What was the old cross oposite the Methodist Church? I missed that one too.

I was down at Elder Park as I heard there is a memorial there but couldn't find it. There is a map at the John Elder monument but not knowing the park that well I didn't manage to find it.

Any idea of where others are?

Theres a war memorial in the park between Dumbarton Road and Spiershall Terrace (sorry it will always be Langholm Street) in Yoker.

It commemorates the local lads who gave their lives in the First World War

Dont have a picture of it at present - not sure if I'd feel comfortable taking a photograph of it as it's next to a childrens playpark, although seeing as the lighter mornings are coming in I might try and get an early morning pic on my way to work one morning.

There is the K13 Submarine Memorial in Elder Park for the men who lost there lives in an accident on the Gareloch in 1917 or thereabouts.

It is just inside the gates of the park off Govan Road directly opposite the old office buildng of Govan Shipbuilders (BAE). I believe the reason that it is there is that workers from the shipyard were aboard the vessel for sea trials.

I remeber reading about it many years ago, i think about half the crew were rescued after spending a couple of days trapped at the bottom of teh Gareloch.

Yoker Brian Hope you manage to get in before the kids. Would like to see this I remember passing it when I worked out that way some years ago.

Happened to be passing by this afternoon so thought I'd take the opportunity of recording this

Here are pictures of the front and back of the K13 memorial. It doesn't look particularly impressive - I suppose it's meant to represent a torpedo.

The submarine went down in January 1917 during her final trials. On board were 55 submariners, 14 directors & employees of Fairfields and 15 other civilians. There were 46 survivors, so 38 men lost their lives, including 6 Fairfields employees.

Obviously the metal plaque is a later addition.

This is the Govan WW1 memorial just outside the entrance to Govan Parish Church, beside the Pearce Insititute.

If anyone is out with their camera at the weekend could you try and get a copy of the memorials at either the Cathedral or if you are up in Springburn I understand there may be one or two up there.

I am told that there are a few in Kelvingrove Park also.

There's two that I know of in Kelvingrove Park.

Someone has already posted the HLI memorial and I gave you a link to photos of the Cameronians.

I've got a couple of the Glasgow Cathedral ones already. I'll post them this weekend.
