I would disagree. The monument to Nelson commemorates him and all his victories, not the people who died to achieve them. It's not a war memorial.

Thank god someone who agrees with me! Can we put this nonsense to bed that any statue to a military person is a war memorial? Because if we don't, next January 16th we'll need to lay wreaths at a Wotherspoons pub...

And I've never heard of the "War Memorial Organisation". Who are they? What do they do?

Before I upset anyone else. Let me just say sorry, if I haven't been able to get all my facts correct in naming an organisation responsible for the maintenance of War Memorial.

What status they have as memorials is currently being checked and I will be happy to retract anything I have said that may be incorrect. As far as I am lead to believe those statues I have mentioned are cared for as War Memorials.

I am happy to put an end to any nonsense but Doc if you want to lay a wreath at Wothespoons pub you go for it.

This seems to be the definitive guide to what is and what isn't a war memorial:

Great site that.

Also, their coverage of Scotland is a little lacking so if anyone wants to help them out by recording some of the memorials they've taken pictures of, send me a PM with your email address and I'll forward on the paperwork they use.

I'm not sure how definitive that site actually is.

It details memorials to Culloden and the Glencoe massacre (!) yet none for Bannockburn or Sheriffmuir for example.

It's not definitive because the information is collated by volunteers. If you want to add those memorials, feel free to volunteer. The IWM have admitted to me that their coverage of Scotland could be a lot better. I think I mentioned this about six pages ago in this thread.

Great initiative Doc

There are a couple on this topic that I believe are not on their list. In particular is the one to James Stockes in the Gorbals. Being new this is one that should be drawn to their attention.

Thanks, S. Their *coverage* may be patchy, but do we agree that their *definition* of a war memorial is pretty clear?

I'd say not if they're including Glencoe which was not even a one-off battle never mind a part of a war.
