Here's a drawing I done of the building last week. The size of the drawing is A4...

Nice piccy SR. Damn sight better than i could do.

One for the musos. Is this a 'real' song that you can name or is it just a pretty painting?

I seem to recall the listing bid was turned down by Historic Scotland, on the grounds that the sign alone didn't have enough merit, but I think that's a bit short-sighted.

It's a traditional ballroom, of which there are pretty much none left intact anywhere else in Scotland. The exterior, sign apart, is hideous, I'll grant, but the interior is pretty much as built in 1960, with all the wee decorative touches that HH has photographed above, as well as etched mirrors and formica bars. And I love the vaulted ceiling in the main auditorium!

It's the kind of timewarp place that someone will probably try to get listed again in a couple of decades, only by then, the place will probably have been gutted for some ill-advised "modernisation".

I think McShad gave up that stall a wee while ago.

These scans were taken from the commemorative booklet and invitation issued to mark the re-opening of the Barrowland Ballroom in December 1960.
Thank you Dexter.

In a month when a few of my workmates are sporting ludicrous moustaches for some charity thing, along comes Billy McGregor to show them all how it should be done...
