1 - The object in Duncan's picture is a bell. Anyone know where it came from? Presumably a church.

2 - The carving in nodrog's picture is the crest of the Caledonian Railway, which built the mansions as a hotel to take the overspill from the Central Hotel.

3 - Fossil may have pioneered the taking of photographs of men's lavvies, but I see this unnatural practice has been taken up by "The Man from B.O.N.K.L.E.".

4 - Afficionadoes of street furniture will surely also enjoy this site. I wish I had thought of the title (top pun):

I'm sure I read somewhere - though I can't remember exactly where at the moment - that this is an urban myth, and that they were always intended to be mansion flats & shops rather than a hotel.

Could be wrong though!
