I thought the High St goods yard was further up from this picture, on the corner of High St and Duke St, on the site of what is now the car park with a facade of the building along the south side of Duke St.

If I'm wrong (and that is entirely probable) what was on the aforementioned site?

You're right Chinaski. There was also another part of the goods station (this
thing was massive) on the site to the south of that picture, where the student
flats now stand. IIRC, roughly at the area of that picture was a few buildings
which looked liked loading/unloading areas. Some of them survived until
the late 1980's.

Cracking ariel view photo there James.

I work in the Ladywell (the building right next to the Great Eastern) and am always saddened when I see pictures of this area in the past and compare it to the eyesore so much of the area is now. Time hasn't been kind to High St, Duke St or the Eastern end of George St.

It has really been isolated from the centre of town over the years due primarily to the amount of vacant land. A lot of construction work on the go and just starting now though.

I'm curious about the goods yard building in the picture. The facade (which I presumed is of this building) which still stands goes right up to the High St, however the building in the photo stops short of that. Any expanation for this?

Like the look of High St Station in that photo, just makes that shoddy mix of plastic and concrete that's there now look all the more hideous.

You mean the facade at the Duke St side? Yes, this does run to the High
St, but the goods station never did. If you look, you'll see a ramp (still in
situ today) at the High St/Duke St junction. That explains the facade at that
side of the goods station. I recall the building itself, in a rather sorry state
in the early 80's, with huge lettering 'High Street Goods Station' along the
front of the roof.

Here's an arial shot of the area, around the time of the M8/Kingston
Bridge construction. You can see the other part of the goods station to the
south of the High St passenger halt. St Enoch is visible to the bottom left also.

James 73, can I ask you if you know the date of the first overhead picture you posted on this thread? I'm curious because of my research interest in the old Duke Street prison included in the shot and I think I can detect some signs of activity within the prison walled area. Did Narveed supply you with the picture?

If you mean the one below, it's from the online Michell Library collection
but has no fixed date on it. It says circa 1930.

January 1978 - you can just see the side of the High St Goods Station, as
a pair of 303's head down the 'lost branch' to Bridgeton Central.

Jim Howie's site has a page all about the Bridgeton Central branch.

Thats what i love about this site... answers to almost everything! I took a wander in the east end with my camera the other day and noticed the duke st facade now car park and thought it was fantastic. But i wondered exactly what it formerly was. A quick search, and i got the answer, with a nice aerial shot to compare with. Here's a coupla pics i took...
