I managed to get this info about the local history group.

I have been advised by a family member who used to be in the group that it meets on Mondays at 2pm in Pollokshaws Parish Church, Shawbridge St. just next to the police station.

Jims post on pollokshaws library is always a good starting point for any research as most public libraries have lists of local groups and often a local history file.

This is just a bit of a ramble aff the tap aye ma heid, but I remember reading something about Maxwell, don't know which lot having witches burned in Paisley. Can't remember the detail or the sources but the one thing that stuck in my mind was a sort of curse that went along with the burning.

After the witches were burned, a cloud of smoke and a horrid smell hung over the town for days or weeks. I can't remember the who or why, but the only way they could get rid of the smoke was to bury a horseshoe in the centre of the area where the witches were burned.

I remember a horseshoe implanted in the centre of the road at Maxwellton St, George St/Canal St, Paisley in the 80's. The actual horseshoes was removed during road works at some point.

But part of the story I read, said that the horseshoe was removed in the mid 18th or 19th cent. and yes you guest it, the smoke and smell returned. So the toon council decided that the horseshoe should be put back and never be removed again.

Obviously Strathclyde Regional Council had no reservations they removed it in the 80's. But the mark of the shoe is still to be seen in the middle of the road. I also heard somewhere that the horseshoe is still under the mark to protect it.!!!!!!!!!!!

Must admit it all smells more like bull than horse to me.

Hope others can verify this story, I think it quite a good one!

I only ever really look at the Projects and coffee lounge forum, must start looking at more!

On the pollokshaws front I would like to take a look at the old Polloc Toon site in front of Pollok House, I have read several snipits in various books and documents over the years, but have not been at the location for many years. Last time I was there I was about 12 and didn't know anything about anything. I was only interested in the river bank!

This would make a good project but it probably needs an archeologists eye.

Excellent, got a copy of Old Pollokshaws the other day. Wierd to see them building right next to the tenements which they demolished next.

OMG I hope when they blow that tower down they do it without damaging the Kirk Lane Burial Ground.

The blocks arent being blown down, more ripped down manually. Apparently all the buildings around that memorial are about to be demolished. Im sure he'd be proud

Thats cool, creates more employment. I am sure Mclean would have been proud of that as for the memorial, I don't think he would have given a shit.

Must try and get a picture of his house, I believe it is still standing.

Does anyone have any pictures of Pollokshaws Burgh Hall? I'm looking for thedetail above the main entrance and also above the windows. All I could find on the net was this from TheGlasgow Story

As you can see from the second pic the main reason for taking this was the war memorial.

The first pic is perfect! Just shows you eh... if you want something done, get a Glasgow City Councillor to do it
