Glasgow's Public Address System?

Postby Rossco » Fri Jan 13, 2006 12:32 pm

Hi Folks

Has anyone heard the Glasgow's public address system? I've got an office on the corner of Sauchiehall Street and Rose Street and heard a couple of tests of it last month. It was during the day when the town was busy and suddenly there was this loud hum and a Scottish voice ot of no wheree said "This is the Glasgow City Public Address System. Testing, testing, 1-2-3" and then the hum stopped. All very weird. It happened again later in the day and my boss and I dashed to the window, hung out but still couldn't make out where the announcements were coming from!?! I can't see anything overtly loud speaker looking anywhere in the street...

There are little speakers dotted about at first floor height on quite alot of buildings arund the centre. Though, I couldn't rightly say for sure where I have seen them. I didn't know they were actually live!

I've spotted them aswell, there are a number of old fashioned looking loudspeakers dotted all the way down Buchannan St.
Never heard anything being transmitted though.

I'm sure what you are hearing is mobile. I'm sure they drove down Union St earlier in the week.

It may be boy racer neds farting about with a CB pa system or something.

Could have been something mobile but the sound seemed to come from above street level. We're on the 3rd floor, one above Deichmann's Shoes (glamourous huh!?!) and couldn't see any source of the sound at street level.

Just had a wander at lunchtime too... and couldn't see anything wall mounted that could have been the origin. All very strange.

I remember see the ones at the corner of Buchanan Street and Gordon Street though, just on the wall above Lush.

Yes, I saw them being removed a few weeks ago.

Apropos of almost nothing; I noted many small towns in rural France have PA systems (for local events/ parish notices and so on).
238 to 127. All in all a good afternoon's work

Public addresses, private fears, anyone know why there were two Fire Wagons in Buchannan St. This morning?

Assuming you are being serious, what is the nuclear warning siren and where is it, where can you hear it, etc.

Its a siren, just like any other. Usually on the roof of the Hotel de Ville or on a high rise if thats possible. And you hear it, especially if you live near the town centre. They dont test them all the time but sometimes you can hear them.

You can see the siren in this photo:

Just went and reread the thread and realised you were saying about it in relation to French towns having a PA system - I thought you meant Glasgow! Apologies!
