Sighthill Tunnel?

Postby Beavis64 » Wed Jan 11, 2006 2:40 pm

Does anyone remember an old tunnel in sighthill around the late 1970's?
It was near the eastern side of baird st police station, just before the old scrapyard on the edge of springburn road.
It's now been filled in and covered over by grass and trees.
I used to play in it with my cousins when I was a nipper but no-one else can remember it for some reason.
If anyone has photos of the area including the scrapyard can you post them on here, it would be great to see them again and bring back some happy childhood memories.

What you remember is the northern portal of Buchanan Street Station tunnel.

But he said the tunnel was on the "eastern side of baird st police station" and
the Buchanan Street tunnel is to the west of the police station. :?

That photograph actually pre-dates the scrapyard and the locomotives are Clayton type 1s, the last of which were withdrawn in 1975. The two locomotives in the photograph were actually towed to Norwich for scrapping! The scrapyard was owned by MC Metals and was established about 1987 on the surplus land created when BR Engineering's Glasgow Works contracted. I Think that MC Metals was an offshoot of McWilliama of Shettleston, who also cut up lots of locomotives.
