Rotundas

Postby PGCC » Thu Jun 06, 2002 10:20 pm

OK lummer welcome to the site. Good question.....what are/were the Rotundas used for?. In a brief and concise history, It was built mid to late 19th century to allow the free flow of vehicular & pedestrian traffic to cross the clyde by means of a tunnel system. It was served by a hydraulic platform that lowered horse & cart and more latterly motor vehicles down a shaft where they proceeded along a somewhat damp tunnel to the other side where the process was reversed. The public used a seperate tunnel from the vehicles. It was in use untill the late 1970's (but don't quote me). If you check the forum on a regular basis you'll probably get updated & accurate info from someone more enlightend on the subject than myself. I read recently, that the northern Rotunda was filled in and capped with concrete during it's renovation but rumour has it that the Southern end was only floored & left accessible for inspection purposes as there is still water mains etc within the old tunnel system. I will be making further official inquiries into the Rotunda in the not too distant future so keep checking back. So does anyone have any personal recollections of going down when it was still open or even more impressive, when it had been officialy shut. PS a workmate (Dave) tells me he & some friends walked it from end to end after is shut & crapped himself and got wet into the bargain ( but as he must be nearing his late 30's his memory might be fading, so I'll take it with a pinch of salt :D

Can you get down to any of the three tunnels or are they all flooded with water?

The Clyde Walkway had just recently opened up the waterfront to pedestrians but as this pic illustrates it was still somewhat industrial at it's western extremities in 1979

G, photo 2 has a strange lamppost with a sort of viewing platform attachment. Any idea what that's about? I've seen a similar one of these near King's Inch in Renfrewshire

To be honest Duncan I don't know what they were used for either.

I'm guessing that they were used for lighting the quayside/signaling the exstensive dockside railways/berthing of ships?

Somebody on here will have the answer I'm sure 8)
