"dookits"

I didn't even know doocots (in Glasgow > dookits, elsewhere> dove cotes) existed until they were pointed out to me. Now i see them everywhere, squeezed into disused land in Glasgow!!! We took the photographs of dookits curently on the http://www.hiddenglasgow.com/doocots site in November 2001 on a walk along the Clyde Cycleway through Scotstoun.

If anyone knows of any dookits worth adding to the site I'd like to hear about it, or if you have any photos or stories etc that could be added ...

Cheers
Sharon

Another one to add to the dookit map!

There are quite a few of these structures around the back end of the Partick Thistle Foorball grounds. If you pop to this link below, you will see what I mean. If you want to place the image, or any of our images on your site here, please drop an email to us and we will say "Sure OK!"

Thistle Manager John Lambie is a famous "doo man" (pigeon fancier) so that perhaps explains why there are a few in the vicinity of Firhill!

There's a Posh Dookit out in Cambuslang.
Old and is situated in the middle of a golf course. Quite big and sandstone built, you can see it from the main road.
I heard it was for doves and not flyin' rats
I'll take a pic when my flash card reader gets fixed

cheers

There was a really good tv(BBC Scotland?) documentary done a few years ago on the dookit world... and a world it is. The programme showed how it has a substantial following, Glasgow for some reason seems to be a massive centre of interest (maybe from the times when wee doos and dookits were one of the few affordable and feasible cultural outlets that working class people could squeeze into cramped tenement life?). The programme attended a huge auction-cum-fair in some building in Springfield Road in the East End.

There's a very similar dovecote in Deaconsbank Golf Course.
(Right at the back end of the course). It should be easily visible
from the railway line that runs passed it.

This is one I took earlier this year in Linlithgow called Ross Doocot.

We walked all round trying to figure out what it was at first as there isn't any doors or plaques near it.

We found out what it was by chance after looking at a map of the area whilst looking at the barges on the canal at Linlithgow.
