The baths closed in 1993 but the building lives on as a snooker club.

My abiding memory of Dennistoun Baths as a child was that the heating was forever breaking down and the pond was always freezing.

I think the management evertually got the hint everyone was fed-up with it when they discovered a large polar bear on a block of ice floating in the middle of the pond - placed there by one of the members who was a rep for the company that produced FOX's Glacier Mints!

Derelict swimming baths...

Postby festering » Thu Jan 05, 2012 5:46 pm

Hallo!

Just wondering if anyone could give me a heads up as to which old derelict bath house/swimming baths are still accessible for shooting in?

And does anyone know if the Whiteinch one is still there and who I'd speak to about gaining access before deciding anything illegal?

Cheers guys!

it's been really interesting reading about all your fond memories of the Steamies. I'm doing some research looking at how Glaswegians would feel if we had to introduce a modern version of a Steamie to save on water and energy. How would you feel if this became a reality? back to the old days of bathing and washing your clothes in the same building as all your neighbors? Would you miss having hot water in your home?

Thanks,
Lottie

The big problem not having hot water in your own home would result in long lines of people waiting outside steamies for hot baths and to get their washing cleaned in dark mornings, which would take up time people just dont have anymore.
I remember those days as from 1972 i worked as an engineer travelling around the city repairing and maintaining the machines and boilers in all the Glasgows steamies and in the 1990s i became the foreman responsible for all mechanical repairs.
From a working perspective these were the happiest days of my working life the banter and the people that i came in contact with made the job enjoyable.Infact when the play the steamie was being made i went about with the productions prop man to some of our shut down steamies looking for props it was fun.

I remember the story about the maniac who escaped from the assylum in Kirkintilloch and jumped on a Glasgow bus. He alighted at Springburn entered the steamie in Kay Street and raped two women. He was chased by the bilerman but escaped.
Next day the boards outside the newsagents read "Nut, Screws, Washers & Bolts!"

Steamie Engineer, firstly I really like your user name, and secondly I really liked your contribution. Cheers :)

Mention of public baths elsewhere reminded me that the public washhouse next to 14 Shaftesbury Street viewtopic.php?f=25&t=12311 is coming down as part of the demolition there.
I hear the people sing.

Great seeing a photo of my old school baths. I think in the five years I was at Bellahouston Academy in the 1970's I was probably in the pool about ten times if even that. They were always out of order. Maybe just as well as they were always so cold. We had to share those changing rooms with two pupils in each one.
