It was a big thing in the late 60's, early 70's. It was supposed to help the passenger flow, especially with the extra time it took OMO drivers to process fairs. 282 Atlanteans were delivered with them, most were converted to single door configuration in the mid 1970's.

The idea worked quite well in London, Edinburgh, and many other places, but Glasgow has it's own way :-)
Although he didn't introduce dual-doors in Glasgow, Ronnie Cox (being from Edinburgh Corporation) was convinced it was a great idea, and wanted to keep ordering dual-door buses, before being eventually talked out of it.

I took this pic of a double door conversion which was being stored in Meadowside Granary shortly before it was demolished (the building not the bus) and looks like it was being used by god botherer's

Tell us more about it GKen all I know is it's not a London bus thing ::):

I must admit i'm stumpted on the purpose of this, or it's exact ID.

What I do know, it's an W. Alexander bodied Atlantean, most probably from Grampian (now First Aberdeen) who were by far the biggest users of this bodywork style, so i'm guessing cuddly First donated it to the group.

Have you a photo which shows the reg number ? I'll be able to get more info.
There is/was a bus which went around the red light districts, I wonder if this is the earlier version.

I think it is a different charity, from what I know / can remember, Doors Open Trust deals with homeless and drug addicts as opposed to vicegirls, for whom I think the Bus was called salt and light, and was based at a Church in Govanhill.

Ive got an interesting pic Ken that I will upload maybe tonight or tommorow.

Yesterday I spotted a double decker sporting Kelvin Central Buses livery with the old Scottish logo.. However this was for a legit bus/coach company!

They seem to be using that as a 'tribute'

There was a yellow and black panoramic style atlantean in George Square today, didn't get a note of the reg no but i'm sure it had LA 1024 (or similar) under the number plate.

The only other thing was the word "vote" on the destination screen.

I do know that this company has a citylink contract for the 900 service Edinburgh/Glasgow run.

It does look like the old Kelvin colours :) I must admit the modern scene does pass me by. Now show me a Glasgow tram....

BTW anybody see the crash on Hope Street earlier ? (I was on a bus going the other way, and couldn't get a good look. And didn't have my camera  ). A single decker ploughed into those fancy barriers at the stop.

That fencing is stronger than I thought, the front dash panel & nearside pillar was bent back at quite an angle.
I suspect he pulled in too fast, and sharp.

Hmm :? It does that, I should have said I was on the top of a passing bus, and facing away from the smash.

I'd bet money he was pulling in too fast

Yeah I saw it, and that's pretty much exactly what happened. No-one seemed to be hurt at least although the bus and the railings looked pretty mangled.
There is no opinion, however absurd, which men will not readily embrace as soon as they can be brought to the conviction that it is generally adopted.

I'm missing the point of the barriers at this part of Hope Street. There are far too many buses and they let you off at the barriers so there is two way pedestrian traffic where there should be none.
