Spotted a news item, Glagow's list includes:

Mercantile Bridge (to recognise the role played by merchants in Glasgow's economic history)

James Watt Bridge (commemorating the steam engine inventor, whose workshop was close to the bridge)

The Comet (after the first steam paddle vessel to sail on the Clyde in 1812)

Dewar's Bridge (to celebrate Scotland's first First Minister)

Other suggestions:

The Glasgow Grin
Rainbow Bridge
Glasgow Harp

Entries can be submitted by e-mail to [email protected].

(Wouln't they have to throw someone off it first, before it could be considered for the Pat Lally Memorial Bridge 8O )

I suppose I am the obvious one to point out that, whatever they call it officially, it will acquire its own name in popular parlance and that is the one that will stick.
Clyde Auditorium, anyone......?

Mercantile Bridge - Recognising the merchants' role in the development of Glasgow's economy.

I suggest Bevvie Merchant's Bridge, recognising the primary use for the Broomielaw in recent decades.

James Watt Bridge - Scotsman James Watt was the inventor of the first practical steam engine which helped transform the world from an agricultural to an industrial one. His workshop was close to the site of the new bridge.

Watt the F**k Bridge mair like.

The Comet - The first steam paddle vessel on the River Clyde. In 1812, the Comet became the first passenger service on the Clyde between Glasgow and Greenock.

How about "Auld Steamer Bridge" then?

Napier's Bridge - Robert Napier is know as the father of Clyde shipbuilding.

Not the Father of Useless Bridges. Bad suggestion.

Dewar Bridge - In May 1999, Glaswegian Donald Dewar became the first First Minister of the first Scottish Parliament in almost 300 years.

He did, and good on him, but now there are several million things named after him. Enough, already! I think that "The Henry McLeish Bridge" might be more fitting, seeing as how he was bent and mis-used public money.

I just don't like that bridge much, especially baring in mind the rather lovely, underused (by pedestrians) stone bridge right next door and the fact that this development will mean the demolition of the Clyde Place assessment centre for disabled homeless people.

Yes, I think Glasgow expects every other city to go 'wow' when this pointless toy opens. I think what will actually happen will be similar to the embarrasing silence which follows a bad joke...

You'd think they could manage something as simple as a bridge without having a major debate and publicity exercise. How would the meeting go?

Well, we definitely need another bridge over the Clyde (no dissenting voices heard)

That sounds like a good publicity opportunty

So, we can't just build a straightforward, sensible an functional bridge then?

God no! It has to have some unique elements to promote discussion and get us noticed

We could use it to block off the upper reaches of the river too, and stop worrying about boats needing access, dredging etc.

Straight's not good either, it would make it unecessarily longer for those crossing it, but think of the ongoing debates in the press about it. More free publicity

What if the odd design doesn't work, like the Milleneum Bridge?

So? It was fixed... more free publicity.

etc... etc... etc...

Let's call it Barney. Barney the Bridge. Put some gigantic illuminous eyes on it, with a big smiley, friendly mouth to welcome any small craft that venture that far up the Clyde. It would become beloved of the city's children and water-bourne visitors.

Well it's a better idea than any the Cooncil had.

Aye. Jackie Bird the Bridge. Put some gigantic illuminous eyes on it, with a big smiley, friendly mouth to welcome any small craft that venture that far up the Clyde. It would become beloved of the city's children and water-bourne visitors, even if it's slight build quality and skeletal design did slightly perturb them.

Of course everybody now calls it the Squinty Bridge and it is nearing completion. Took a couple of snaps when I was walking past just over a week ago:

Also from the Southside - this is the access road from the Govan Road end, unfortunately rather cluttered at present.

They have some weird sort of thing suspended above it at the moment... possibly a part that runs along the centre... I do work rather close to it so see it most days

The steel supporting arch has still to go in, it's probably associated with that McShad. Did anyone see the article in the times last week about them completing the last section of the road deck? Seems we are bang on schedule with this... down to the hour! Lets hope the success of this bridge (and it will be a success) will spur our city fathers on in the pursuit of more bridges on the Clyde!

YokerBrian... lets get that campaign started
