The day the ferries went off due to Icebergs!

Postby retired tiger » Wed Oct 05, 2005 3:53 pm

I think the day Icebergs stopped the ferries must have been during the winter of 1963/4.
I was half way through my apprenticeship at Fairfields and used the Whiteinch ferry on my way home to Knightswood. On arrival at the ferry stairs there was a notice up that the ferry was off due to ice in the river. There had been a thaw after a really long hard freeze up and sure enough big lumps at least 3' across were floating down the river. What to do? I remembered the old tunnel still allowed pedestrians through, so off I went but it sure was a long way round to Knightswood.
Not long after this fog put the ferry off again and not wanting to cycle for miles I thought I'd have a look down the nearly finished new tunnel. The cycle/pedestrian tunnels weren't open but they were just laying the surface on the road tunnel so I thought I'd do a Greame Obree and whiz through. All was going well until I hit the wet tar. A head over heels manoeuvre ensued much to the mirth of the boys with the black stuff. Still I got through, although it took a few hours to clean the tyres of my Hetchins curly back.
