No way. There are too many scary beasties, it's too hot, and I hate barbecues almost as much as Fondues.

No need to worry Josef, I promise the "beasties"(love that description) will be on their best behavior, you hate BBQs', you have never had an Aussie barbie then? perhaps you would change your mind as there is nothing better to sip a cold beer on a nice warm day, smelling the steaks and onions or whatever it may be, gotta agree with ya on the fondues though.

Re: ultrateque disco in sauchiehall st early eighties?

Can anyone help me fill in the blanks:
What was the show filmed for ? was it The Tube?
Who were the other acts
Was it the ultrateque?
What date was it?

Thanks

I was a steward in Ultratheque throughout the 80's and dont remember anything being televised from there.

I was at that event with Blancmange and I can't remember where it was either. it was for a slot in the middle of a TV show so The Tube could be a good shout. I think it was more likely to be Night Moves than Ultratheque. I remember the volume was set really low so they had to tell us when to dance and when to clap. Not a lot of fun as I recall. We went to a club in a street off the north side of Sauchiehall Street, close to the Glasgow Film Theatre afterwards. Can't remember the name of it for the life of me.

Wasn't the Cotton Club, on Scott Street, was it?

The above is correct. Tik and Tok were also there.

The Tube did send the occasional film crew out on a sorty.
"I before E, except after C" works in most cases but there are exceptions.

Yes! Yes it was. Except being a touch older it was the early 80's and it was known as Maestro's. A quick google search for the Cotton Club led me to Maestro's. Thanks very much, it's been driving me mad.

My boy turns 18 on Sunday and it's where I'm heading to get him his first (ahem!) pint. Loved going into the place when at Strathclyde, still pop in now and again. Another piece of history torn apart in the name of progress. :?

Regrettable, but IMHO the building was probably too far gone to repair economically, and I'm surprised it has managed to hang on this long. Nothing lasts forever at the end of the day, and at least the owner is making an effort to keep the name and spirit of the place alive - which doesn't happen very often.

From the Herald.

"Glasgow City Council has refuted any suggestion the building was dangerous.

A spokesman said: "The Old College Bar building is structurally sound, it's not a dangerous building." "
I hear the people sing.

That's a denial or a contradiction, not a refutation.

I am trying to get in touch with Marie Gallagher or any member of the Hugh Gallagher family of publican (Tirconnail Bar.
173 Cumberland Street, Gorbals). Anyone know of anyone from this family or know how I could get in touch with them?
This web site has been developed to record our local landmarks and to give a brief history on our old pubs. www.oldglasgowpubs.co.uk
