The Goat, Partick

Hi all,

I've searched for this and found nothing, so many apologies if i'm repeating what someone else has asked previously.

I was browsing the Glasgow West End site the other night, when i stumbled across the following interesting passage:

The Goat

This area is the heart of the old pre-industrial village of Partick, and Keith Street used to be known as The Goat. The goat in question was not four footed, but an old Scots name for a small burn, one of which ran here. At the north end of The Goat was The Heid o' the Goat, a place where acrobats, quack doctors and religious and political agitators held court. A nineteenth century Partick poet Tom Burns describes the scene,

Though its richt name's in print on a prominent spot
The ane its best kent by is the heid o the Goat
There tradesmen o every class you will find
In guid Doric language expressing their mind

The old cottage buildings here were only demolished in the 1930s, and the Heid o the Goat is now the Comet car park.

A small burn?!? Interesting... :)

Anyone know any more info on it? Interesting that there is a pub along the road on Argyll street, called 'The Goat'.

I reckon the burn must have started round about here but as to where it ended up, who knows... :?

I'm only presuming, but it must have flowed into the Kelvin at some point? I'm sure its all been piped and built over now, but is there a visible outflow pipe somewhere nearby? Anyone got any dowsing rods and a free afternoon...

They'd need it to converse with the goats.

Worth pointing out that what was formerly Murphys Pakora Bar ...and other stuff ... is now a pub called The Goat and offers and excellent range of quality bar food at a reasonable price. Kinda at the end of Old Dumbarton Rd.

It also has the tale of why its called teh goat in the pub. Which is probaly the same as whats quoted above. Although I kinda assumed that where the pub was would have been the area...

Molly, you got more info????

Presumably, this area was where the influx of Aberdonians came to to live during that era to seek their fame and riches. Close by to the river might have been handy for the shipbuilders etc

I guess you could relate it to other European cities which have Jewish Quaters, French Quaters and Particks Gaelic Quater.

There are some pretty impressive pipes and such like all along the banks of the Kelvin. Next time I am down at the Partick end I will have a gander and see if I can see a Burn like outflow!

I took a walk down Benalder St yesterday evening. If you stand on the upstream side of the bridge and look at the north bank there's a pipe there that looks suspiciously like the outflow of a wee burn. I'll take a photo if someone doesn't beat me to it first. :D

The Goat is the area now known as Keith Street (down from Comet on Dumbarton Road). I'll take some photos this afternoon.

There's a large pipe where water flows at a fair rate into the Kelvin just above the bridge at Benalder Street. Could this be it?

Yeah, that's what I said.
