The oldest graveyard is around the High Kirk, dating to the fifth century.
The Ramshorn in Ingram Street is about 1,200 years younger. There are a number of famous people buried there, including David Dale, a number of Tobacco Lords, Pierre L'Angelier, and John Anderson.

A glance at http://www.theglasgowstory.com or a quick search on Google would have revealed this. Sigh! Young people today! Want everything on a plate!

Brilliant, Crusty.
The first one above is a watch-house, rather than a mausoleum. The fireplace is a bit of a giveaway :D

You can't really see it in the second picture, but when I was there, the cage made me think that this was the last resting place of the Nardini clan (more than a touch seaside art deco) 8)

And I just loved your parting shot. Gold star, young Crusty.

And it used to have a roof until some bright spark thought it'd be a good idea to light a fire in the fireplace.

Sighthill safari

Postby Ronnie » Thu Dec 01, 2005 11:37 pm

Anyone fancy a wander round Sighthill Cemetery this month? Maybe Sunday 11 or 18, early doors (before the neds are awake), followed by a spot of luncheon in the town (or Xmas shoppery in Lidl)?

Anyone have a map or any other material about the cemetery?

Go in a pack... Even the Necropolis isn't respected. A 62 year old man was mugged and had his cash stolen by a pair of youths there last week. Nor even late in the day, the attack took place around 3 pm.

It's gone in the kitty litter now, but I think it was on the front page of The Gen (Glasgow Eastern News), probably issue w/e Friday 18th Nov.

Sunday 11th would be good for me, 18th is the day after Noir and I intend to be a little fragile that day.

If you look in Strathclyde Polis website under archive news you should be able to find the report.

I recall it happened in the first week in November, unless there has been another mugging.

Looks like Sunday 11th is good for some folks. Could we say 10am at Sighthill cemetery gates?

Meantime, free guided tour of Glasgow Necropolis Sunday 4th at 2.30.
