The shops are/were managed by City Property on behalf of the Council. Presumably council insurance will pay?

What insurance would that be?
"I before E, except after C" works in most cases but there are exceptions.

You'd imagine that since these are commercial lets they'd all be on a 'full insuring and repairing basis' and that if the tenant hasn't taken out insurance they'll be responsible for the full cost of reinstation the property to the condition it was in when the tenancy started.

I'd like to think the council makes periodic checks to ensure such insurance is in place.

Maybe there's another wee lane somewhere in the Calton that could be renamed.

If the whole block was council owned, i presume that they declared it dangerous, whereby the demolition team was called in so quick.

Dangerous Buildings

Dangerous & Derelict Buildings

There are occasions when public safety may become jeopardised by the condition of buildings. The Service is charged with the responsibility of enforcing the requirements of Section 29 of the Building (Scotland) Act, 2003, with regard to dangerous buildings. The Service is therefore committed to treating any report of a dangerous structure as a priority issue, and will immediately investigate any report. To this end, an "Emergency Call-Out" service is operated, providing Glasgow with a 24-hour, 7-days a week cover for potentially dangerous situations. If action is required to safeguard the occupants or general public, the Service will take whatever action is necessary to remove the danger. Where practical, the building owner(s) will be given the opportunity to instruct the required works. If the Service instructs a contractor to undertake works, we will thereafter advise the owner(s) of the action taken, and implement the procedure to recover the costs incurred. If, following procedures to address the immediate danger or to prevent access to and around the affected property, danger still exists, the Service will serve a Dangerous Buildings Notice on the owners of the property. The Notice requires the owners to carry out such operations as are necessary to remove the danger within a specific time period. This is the first step in a statutory procedure whereby works must be undertaken by the owner(s) or, the local authority, to remove the danger.

I was on a bus that went past this yesterday and naturally presumed it was another fantastic scheme to build more crappy flats like the ones across the road, (guess what? metal rusts). Anyone want to bet the disused pub will go up in smoke this year? Also this raises the prospect of having an available site for a Glasgow Cross station if the crosslink ever gets the green light, this probably means they'll cram any development right up against the bridge to knacker that idea.

Shipka Pass Wine Bar

Postby the bar biographer » Sun Nov 20, 2011 3:55 pm

I'm not sure if I dreamt this or there actually was a wine bar in the Shipka Pass market (off Gallowgate). Everything's changed now with the fire and the earlier closure of the Shipka market but I did take a photo about 3 years ago of a wine bar sign on the derelict remains of the market.

Can someone enlighten me?
