Does anyone have any old maps of Glasgow or know where I could get one that wouldnt cost me and arm and a leg?

I am looking for a map just before the M8 was built, basically so I can see what was torn apart.

Thanks!

The Mitchell Library has plenty that are free to look at. Also the National Library of Scotland has some online:

Another good source is second hand bookshops, or the Oxfam bookshop in Byres Road.

Try here for some really old maps and they are relatively cheap.

http://www.alangodfreymaps.co.uk/scotland.htm

You might want these

6.03 Springburn 1894
6.07 St Rollox 1894
6.08 Glasgow NE (Provanmill, Blackhill & Riddrie) 1893
6.10 Central Glasgow 1893
6.11 Glasgow (High St) 1909
6.12 Glasgow (East End) 1893

I find it very sad that the M8 was the start of the demise of Townhead. On my last visit to Glasgow I was saddened to see that Townhead just doesn't exist anymore apart from the Royal :(

On that note try and get "Townheads a Goner" can't remember the author and also "The Good and Bad" book about the Garngad by Pat Thompson, for an idea of the general area before M8 swathed through it.

Hi emmar
You could also look at

which has a good selection of very well scanned old maps of the city.
Best, Ronnie

I'm hoping a mate gives me a map of Glasgow c.1962 before the M8 cut it's way through the middle of the city. He says it's pretty detailed.

I'll take to work and scan when I get it.

"Old Townhead's a Goner" and all the other "Old..." books can be found at

http://www.stenlake.co.uk/index.htm

Didn't notice they had a web site till I looked at my copy for a reference. Protective of their pics though, there are no samples from their books on the site, other than the pic with the description of the book.

Better samples availalbe on-line at:

http://www.francisfrith.com/

but watch out for the accuracy of the descriptions sometimes, we've caught them out one or two :)

Got a great pictorial map of Glasgow from 1937 today. It has all the old railways lines and stations etc.
If anyone wants any scans of any particular area, let me know.
