:D First time user. Great Website

Have been trawling through some websites and came across old maps. Anyone have any info about the village that used to be Ruchazie before the council housing was build post war?

Any info would be appreciated. :)

Hello,
Did you get a reply?
I used to cycle around that area 60 years ago and I too would like some photos of what was a lovely area,

I wish I had time to search more on HG so thanks Frank for bringing this topic back after over a year and sorry FC for not finding it.

Although I haven't got much of the old history before the houses where built there are some things I would like to post. It will take a bit of time to get together all the bits and pieces. Unlike the Monklands Canal topic there is more scope here so although I may not have the answer to your original question FC may be we can get some stories of life in Ruchazie over the last 40 years and if we are lucky find something of the old area.

I am not sure that there was much of a village as the Glasgow Story tells that the land was purchased many years ago by the old Glasgow Corporation with a view to provide new homes to solve the overcrowding within the city.

There may be some information and there will be old maps within the Mitchell Library. I have a collection of old maps which I bought at the Mitchell. The one for Glasgow (East End) 1893 has a part which shows Gartcraig House. I will get that section scanned and post it. At the time when I bought this map the others for the sections near here were not available. May be they are now.

I recently visited my old school, Ruchazie Primary and took lots of photos so I will work on posting some of the better ones. I also have some old family photos and whilst I would not intend posting these I will see if any have interesting views like the ones previously posted on the Monklands Canal topic.

I use to have a collection of the Review the local news for Ruchazie, Craigend and surrounding area. The Review was edited by J G Byrne. I did a bit of work for the paper taking photos and writing articles occasionally. Unfortunately I lost most of my copies and only have one edition left. No 38 February 1979. It cost 6p.

Hopefully others will have stories to contribute and maybe some suggestion of where we can find more about the history of Ruchazie.

Thanks Alex. I posted this when I first joined and forgot about it. It would be nice to see what was in the area in the way of old photos. I see from some old maps that where our houses were was the area where the Gartcraig House sat and that the old bridge (where the new bridge is over the motorway) was called Jessie's Bridge. I wonder who she was??

Anyway, maybe we'll get lucky and someone will track something down.

A map for 1893 showing Gartcraig House.

As you point out FC it does look like this was the location or very near to where we lived in Gartcraig Road just over the bridge.

A copy of the Ruchazie Review 1979.

I have the other 13 pages scanned and can post them up if any one would like to see more.

Read in the Glaswegian this week that a Community Arts Project in Ruchazie is launching a photographic archive on June 1st at http://www.glaswegians.org.

Sounds like a worthwhile project and is set to grow as users are encouraged to submit photographs to the archive.

What, is the new one a PPP effort...

The PPP was restricted to the secondary schools. I believe Ruchazie and the other primary schools are being paid for through normal borrowing.
