Irn Bru

Postby Pgcc93 » Sun Feb 22, 2004 10:00 pm

Found this pic of the last Irn Bru sign that used to be situated on the roofspace of Glasgow Central Station.

I took this pic in December 1984, it's not very clear but those of you who remember it will figure it out. It's just above the 'Bell's' whiskey sign. Also long gone.

Anyone got a picture of the previous Advert, I think it was 'Ba Bru' or sumit? a wee red indian fella, was there in the 1970's IIRC.

I remember the signs well. Yes, and Ba Bru was about as PC as the Robertson's jam character! Another contemporary was Abdul Abul-bul Amir, a cartoon character who advertised some brand of beer or other. (I was wee, and all beers tasted uniformly horrible. Unlike today, obviously).
Don't ask me where I read this, but there are plans afoot for a one million pound extremely high tech laser sign for the same place on the roof of Central Station ... Anybody know more?
Best, Ronnie

There is a new sign in the same place as the Irn Bru sign used to be, don't know when it was installed but I noticed it the other night when walking down Renfield Street.

Advertising Coca Cola I think, Ba Bru must be turning in his grave!

Yeah! Woolly I just noticed that new sign
a couple of weeks ago.

Too bad 'Irn Bru' outsells any other brand of soft drink
in only one place in the whole world. Yup! Scotland.....
My heart bleeds for the global multi-national Cola Co. that
just can't quite cut it with us free thinking Scots.

There's a lot to be said about buying home produce etc.
Ok! the stuff we drink might be perhaps bottled in Manchester,
but Barr's have kept the identity without selling out.....err!
Yet!!.

That's not a BT building. The technology on the top is whats left of Atlantic Telecom coms network. They operated from a few floors in that building a few years back (thats where ur line got cut off if u hadnt paid ur bill!)... till they went bust! After that, there was no money left to take down the sat-rigs etc

Always thought it a pity about Atlantic... theyr wireless technology was revolutionary!

I have the little clock to commemorate the sign. I think they had some sort of special event for it when it was replaced and they made a handful of clocks for it. My dad worked for the Evening times at the time, maybe it was the Sunday Mail then and he managed to bag one for me. Still works :) makes a nice *tick* sound.
