When did the Meadowside Granary finally close?

Postby PGCC » Wed Mar 27, 2002 10:57 am

Does anyone know when the Granary finally ceased being used for it's sole purpose as a grain store?. I lived accross the road from it in Thornwood between 1988-96, but was never aware of much grain operation.

I lived in Thornwood too (until around 86'), used to play (get into trouble) near the Granary. Plenty of rats, and stories of Grain-fed super-rats, but no big ships. Although i was told by one of the more adventurous types in my school class that there was grain a a large tower with some sort of chute that they slid down.

Was still in use in 1992 but this seems to have been its final year.

I was speaking to a guy yesterday...he reckoned that the 1960 building was still in use until a year and a half ago. They were still exporting grain at that point.

BUMP

Managed to blag a free go on the Science Tower yesterday. A very informative wee mannie was full of interesting info about the area.
Apparently (allegedly) poison couldn't be used to deal with the rat population when they were demolishing the building due to pollution implications, so they put in teams of wee dogs, which were duly massacred by the teams of rats. At least 200 dugs met their grisly end this way.
