Jings... over the past week or so I've been doing some scoping work for a radio idea and, boy, have I found out that the 'treatment' the Wellington statue, and the Dewar one, have been getting is a really hot topic among guys and girls in the arts and crafts side of things in the city. A great many of them are reading into all this, something about what they see as a philistine Glasgow public. I'm not talking here about arty-farty high culture types - rather they come across as genuine craftspeople and artsists enaging with everyday life. For example, my most recent discussion on this was in a discussion group comprising mostly of artists working in deprived communities. I've certainly become a bit more circumspect about about how I bring this topic up, and I have to admit I think of the whole thing as a bit less of an entire joke than I did before.

Joking aside - I'm coming round to agreeing with the council about this one.

I know it probably shouldn't make any difference but the fact that the Wellington statue is early Victorian (and not late Victorian as I believed) I think makes quite a difference. I know there's only 40 yrs in it - but there can't be much in Glasgow (statues or buildings) that dates from the 1840's - where as relatively speaking there’s quite a bit from the 1880's.

I've always been quite dismayed by the treatment of the Dewar statue. I know most vandalism is mindless, but every time the statue is damaged I can’t help but feel it reflects a disrespect to him as a person. Whilst I was never been a big fan of Donald - I think we do owe him recognition for his achievements (particularly devolution), and he was undoubtedly one of the most significant Scottish public figures of the late 20th century (long with Ewan McGregor and his like)

Tom Sheilds was talking about whole this issue in his column in the Sunday Herald - mostly in relation to the recent damage to the Lobey Dosser statue.

Anyway . . .

Anyone interested in the subject might be interested in the next AHSS lecture - which is this coming Thursday.

Seems that its not just neds and yahoo Henry students who disrespect items of public sculpture. See my comments on Ray McKenzie's talk last Thursday on Paisley-not-Glasgow in 'Architectural Heritage Society' in Whats On forum

The Shuggies

Postby cumbo » Sun Mar 20, 2005 11:05 pm

Passed Wellington late last night, cone as usual was in place but with the new addition of a poem stuck on the side of the plinth.
''A cone on the head
he will never be dead,
So long as the city
remembers it's duty
to wellington dashing
in traffic-cone red''
THE SHUGGIES
Who are The Shuggies and do they have any more Glasgow statue poetry?

Why did Wellington matter to Glasgow? Any statues realting to individual members of the Royal family or famous English generals shouldnt really be IN Glasgow in the first place

The metalwork us undeniably very good but the historical figures did little for anyone alive today or even people alive at the time. Statues like Lobey Dosser or Donald Dewar actually mean something to people in this city.

How many Robert the Bruces or William Wallaces do you find down south 8O

There, no movement. This is an ex-horse. It has ceased to be.

You stunned him, just as he was waking up!

They are made of metal anyways.

Chris...

The council would want a hike in council tax to pay for the leccy bill.

Hear Hear Vladimir!
Melt these icons of English oppression down and make new statues of true Scottish heroes! Mel Gibson & Billy Connelly.

Well, anyone else have suitable subjects for George Square Statues?
