That's quite a significant photo as it shows the original Queen St Station roof before the present barrel roof was built.

This is it in more detail...

Another significant George Square picture is this one which shows the buildings which were demolished to make way for the City Chambers.

Fantastic post Brickwall ;)

That murky night in the 50's phots shows some of the old Christmas displays around the Sir Walter Scott monument :)

There are some good photos of the Sqaure on the Virtual Mitchell.

The last two posts will hopefully bring this topic to life. Hopefully others will search out images of how the Square has evolved over the years.

Thanks Alex.
I've got some smashers taken of my Dad by the Grand Folks. They're really gritty and and show how it was just before, and just after the war. I'll post 'em when I dig 'em oot!

Here's a set I put together for another forum, there will be a couple of repeats but i gots to keep da flow...

1828 Interestingly the Scott monument was added to this image later as i have its earlier counterpart without it! Originally it was intended to have a monument to George III after whom the Square is named.

Look forward to seeing them Brickwall :)

I will see what I can find. I took a couple of shots last year of the Pipe Bands in the Sqaure. I also have a DVD that has a shot from the mid 60's. I keep meaning to get a capture and post it up but haven't gotten round to doing it yet.

Very nice work Crusty, & brickwall :-)

I've posted this a few times, but just in case someone missed it, this video includes a few scenes of George Square from 1960 ish.

One thing I've always felt about the City Chambers is that the central tower looks rather ungainly and out of place, as if it belongs somewhere else. Personally I think the building would have looked more elegant if the tower hadn't been part of the design. Bit late now I suppose.

technichally, the bell tower (or campanile) of the Chambers is perfectly appropriate for its Italianate style. I know what you mean though, the treatment of the elevations, with thier classical orders, sumptuous carvings and perfectly executed little domes and cupolas is very delicate wheras the tower is 'trunk-heavy', with the deep channeled ashlar really quite at odds with the rest of the composition.

can't help but love it tho 8)

I kind of agree with you both but it looks good at night; standing guard over the rest of the chambers.

When did the tourist pavilion disappear, i have vague memories of it.

Amazing how the amount of grass gets less and less as the years went on.

It was still there in 1983. I think it bit the dust just after that.

I like this one best. It makes it look much more like a park, it seems so empty these days. :x

It ain't our square anymore and you all better get used to that. Of course it isn't like a park, you can't stick all sorts of pish in a park.

The city fathers have turned it into an outside extension of the SECC where crush barriers prevail. Tonight Matthew I'm going to be an ice rink/jazz festival/crap art exhibition (delete where appropriate).

Thank you NuLab for nothing.

Now give us our square back so we Glaswegians can use it the way it's meant to be used, for giving us some breathing space in a mad city. And take your big lamp post banners and crush barriers somewhere else.
