The Robroyston Wallace Monument is located on the B812 Kirkintilloch Road, on the right hand side just beyond the roundabout. (Behind the Asda supermarket)

From Glasgow, take the Stirling motorway, take the Bishopbriggs turnoff, to the Asda, then follow the signs to Kirkintilloch, when you reach the last roundabout, the Monument is two hundred yards away

Further along the same road is Wallace's well.

Hope this helps

Did the monument not used to be situated below the motorway at the top of the High Street. I seem to remember being shown it by my grandfather round about 1974. I went back many years later there was no plaque there and the place just stank of pee and loads of empty lager cans lay strewn about.

I was told there was once a plaque near High street (Wallace defeats the English Garrison in Glasgow at the Battle of the Bell o' the Brae.) but was vandalised

the monument at robroyston ...is where wallace was captured .... and could do with a bit of care....its a shame that such an important site will soon be in the middle of a housing estate.

THE WALK FOR WALLACE 2005

Postby paul27 » Sat Jan 15, 2005 7:37 pm

The date William Wallace was captured is wrong on the monument

From the Society of William Wallace web site:

David R. Ross, current convenor of the Society of William Wallace, will commemorate the memory of Wallace, by walking from Robroyston near Glasgow, to London, on the 700th anniversary of the actual event.

Wallace was captured on the 3rd of August 1305, and arrived in London on the 22nd of that month, the journey taking 19 days. On the 23rd, he was taken to Westminster Hall, the oldest part of the current Houses of Parliament, where his sham trial took place. He was taken outside and tied to the tails of horses to be dragged the 6 miles through the city to his murder at Smithfield.

Therefore the same dates in 2005 mark the 700th anniversary.

That would be quite fitting. 700 years after being captured, they build luxury flats as a lasting testemony to him.
Quite touching really.

Used to be a place I stoppe doff at during my cycling around that area...used to be all green fields when I was a nipper :?

the well was always pretty tatty, but IIRC is was tidied up quite extensively in the late 80s/early 90s by members of siol nan gaidheal

maybe there should be a clean up or an encouragement for the council who are responsible for its upkeep (east dumbartonshire i think) to do something for the anniversary .......

would be a nice gesture ....or how about a statue of mel gibsonlike in stirling........ ::):

That is truely the most awesomely tacky thing i have seen!!

I recall one night i was at a Thai fight and we got talking to some guys - frinds of a guy who we were there to see fight.... nice guy, excellent body... which he wanted me to help him come up with a tattoo to cover it with....

trouble was, he was insistent that it would be mel gibson as braveheart with "freedom" underneath... he was deadly serious about this..... *sigh*

I sometimes wonder if he ever got it done...

Hmm... to tell the truth Sharon I think this repulsive tacky nonsense of an object is very much in keeping with much of the repulsive tacky nonsense that often surrounds the whole Braveheart thing.
