But what of the mysterious red 'TARDIS' police phone boxes?

Everyone has seen a blue one (the one on Buchanan Street by Borders is famous, as is the one now used as a coffee shop by the Botanic Gardens) but what of the strange red ones?

I seem to recall seeing a total of three around the merchant city area, though where exactly I cannot recall. One of the three I've seen was badly vandalised and had a tree growing in it.

Red was the traditional colour for Glasgow police boxes, until it was changed.

There's a red police box in the Transport Museum I think.

And I spotted a red phone box today in Drybridge, Ayrshire.

Aha. Of course. I live right next door as well and I often go in there for coffee. Silly me.

Anyone know where i can pick one up cheap ( a proper red one that is) - would make a cracking greenhouse I reckon!

BTW- would I be right in thinking that the red phone boxes were made at the Lion Foundary in Kirkintilloch, which closed around the time that they were phased out?

I've had a wee hobby for the last 20 years of checking the plate at the bottom of the red phone box (on the outside of the window-less panel). I've only ever seen Saracen, Carron and Lion Foundries. However, sometimes the box is right up against a wall and its difficult to see the plate or the box has been refurbished and the plate removed.

Being a Kirkie boy myself, I like to find the Lion Foundry ones.
I'm old enough to remember the foundry belching out thick, yellow acrid smoke as late as 1977. The most exotic I've seen to date is the Troodos Mountains in Cyprus have a green painted one.

There still seems to be loads of these phone boxes down here in England. But they are all from one of those three foundries.

Is there still the phonebox on Bute with the chipmunks kept inside it?

Having just gone throught this topic I don't know if one of the deleted pictures was one othe the disussed box that is located in the Travellers site in Carntyne.

It isn't red and looks a bit rusted.

I will try and get a photo from the train on my way to work one day next week.

Not a great photo but I didn't want to get too close. This is in the Travelers in Carntyne.
