The phonebox on Ledard Rd outside the telephone exchange that was mentioned earlier is no longer there, unfortunately. Just a patch of dark asphalt :(

As far as I can tell it's been out of use for a while - there is no phone inside - and it reeks of pish!

I only arrived at the Dalzell works 6 weeks ago - so can't say for definite when it stopped being a phone

Years ago i did phone box cleaning for a friend of mine when he was on holiday for a week used to start at 6am as had to do the town phone boxes first and some of the boxes were disgusting where persons had pissed in the phone box some dirty buggers used to defecate in them as well which was worse than the piss smell also remember this was in the days before disposable gloves for avoiding contact with bodily fluids were the norm
this was back in 1988 so am talking quite a few years ago
i dont think the boxes are cleaned now possibly due to the amount of mobile phones that are now being used and the lack of use of public kiosks

i remember two red phone boxes in pollock street which were permenant vandalised there was no phone just the base part that contained the coin box
there were two red boxes in admiral street which amazingly actually worked and there was also a k8 at portman street i think
this was in the days of pips when answered and you pushed 2p or 10p into the slot some of these phones used to have such a backlog of 10p that it was possible to release one from the coin return slot with an ice cream lolipop stick most times this would realise at least 50p as the coin behind would drop down but a metal tag held the coin until released ::):

I used a telephone box to show one of my granddaughters how to put lots of parallel lines in place with set squares.
She loves drawing and was surprisingly quite interested!
The finished article is an isometric view of a K6 telephone box with all the golden bits restored to their former glory.
Designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott in 1935 at the time of the silver jubilee of King George V.

Does anyone know if they still teach technical drawing at secondary school?
