Anyone know where i can pick one up cheap ( a proper red one that is) - would make a cracking greenhouse I reckon!
BTW- would I be right in thinking that the red phone boxes were made at the Lion Foundary in Kirkintilloch, which closed around the time that they were phased out?
I've had a wee hobby for the last 20 years of checking the plate at the bottom of the red phone box (on the outside of the window-less panel). I've only ever seen Saracen, Carron and Lion Foundries. However, sometimes the box is right up against a wall and its difficult to see the plate or the box has been refurbished and the plate removed.
Being a Kirkie boy myself, I like to find the Lion Foundry ones.
I'm old enough to remember the foundry belching out thick, yellow acrid smoke as late as 1977. The most exotic I've seen to date is the Troodos Mountains in Cyprus have a green painted one.
There still seems to be loads of these phone boxes down here in England. But they are all from one of those three foundries.
The K8 may look horrible but is now very rare with only 12 known working examples and none in Scotland that are known of.The 20th Century society started a campaign to find them all several years ago.AMcD wrote:dr_lightning wrote:The horrible red one with one big window, as seen in Gregory's Girl (where Carol gets changed before going for chips with Gregory) is I think, a K8.
