All over central Glasgow, in Hope St., Sauchiehall St. and everything in between, all the buildings are, on average, 8 storeys or higher. In Argyle st., between Buchanan St. and Stockwell St. you'd be lucky to find a building higher than 4 storeys. It's all too small!

How about Debenhams. Marks and Spencer, the tall building on the corner of argyle street and miller street, the new build on Queen Street student flats they are more than 4 stories.

What I meant by the shops under the bridge was not that they were the originals but over time people refer to them as "the shops under central”

DVF wrote:James, I found that picture of St. Enoch Underground being rebuilt. It shows the tunnels just one storey down. The station roof would have encroached into the basements of any buildings that might have been there. I also found a drawing showing the proposals for another low level line there running north south beside the Underground. The drawing shows the existing low level line above the Underground. But there's not enough space according to the picture of the station getting rebuilt. I'm confused.

I'd say these tunnels are two storeys down, because I've been inside
St Enoch since it was re-developed. :D When you go down the initial
stairs/escalators from street level, you're in a sort of mezzanine, then
you down more escalators to the platforms. The Underground, AFAIC,
must surely pass under the Argyle Line.

Wow, what a popular and interesting thread. First, there is no evidence I have ever seen - and if anyone has it, I would live to see it - of the street level of ANY Glasgow street being raised by 10-12 feet. So, no subterranean Grahamston or Argyle Street/ Argyll Arcade shops, houses or offices. The glazed portholes in Argyll Arcade, just like the glazed areas in front of buildings all over the city, were there to help illuminate the basements. There are NO gaps in the records of the town council, the Dean of Guild Court, the Glasgow Herald or any other continuous sources that would allow such an enormous civil engineering project to have happened outwith our knowledge.
And who might have paid for it ...
Best, Ronnie

Re: Glasgow Central, It originaly only had 9 platforms when it opened
circa 1879.
Foundations are 45ft below street level BTW!

Surprisingly platforms 2-8 ran much further into the station than they do presently. Almost reaching the Gordon Street entrance. If they were still there they would almost certainly terminate roughly where they Dried fruit & Nut stall is situated today.

The tell tale sign of the additional platforms can be seen from platform 11, if you look upwards towards the fan shaped glazing above Plat. 9 where it meets the 1902-1908 extension i.e platforms 10 - 13

I'll post up some pics taken of the work in progress 1902 when I have time.

underground

i think, by looking at that pic of the underground, that the argyle line goes under the underground, as it looks 1 story down and the argyle is 2 storys.

Sorry, but the Argyle line is right under Argyle St, whereas the underground
is two storeys down. Go to Saint Enoch station and you'll see what I mean.
And while you're at it, go to the site of the old glasgow Cross station,
stand on the grills, and wait for a passing train.

I’ve had a chat with some ex BR track maintenance about The Street. Maybe the location should be Glasgow Cross/Trongate, where the old Glasgow Cross Train Station was. The shops I’ve been informed could be described as small booths and structures built in to arches (like that small one at the top of Hope St). Maybe at this time you could have a small business and have no need for planning permission or a licence. Was the railway private and the lines anyone know? :?
Redevelopment at Glasgow Cross just now I think the grating has been replaced.

On another point there are reports of feral cats in residence

Interesting! When u pass the old High St station (which was revealed to me by this site and is the reason I keep coming back!) on the train u can catch a glimpse of an ornamental cast-iron pillar illuminated by the light from the grates above. The grates are still there btw.

yeah, on that elevated section... passed it last nite.
I have to say, it's very shoddily done... theyve put down those thick slabs of slate and just plonked the grates back down where they were... it leaves a difference of about 60cm between them and the slate! Tsk Tsk!!!

The pillars are on what was the platform. It was an island platform IIRC.

would the pillar be for the original staircase? I’ve never seen pictures of the inside of the building. The space that it occupied (Iron shaped) maybe indicates the staircase could have been spiral?

No, it's probably to hold up the street above :D

The original station had it's entrance on the little pavement island at
the Glasgow Cross side. I read there was another way in, at the Tron
Theatre - this area has been redeveloped in recent years so I dont know
if it's still visible. Certainly, you used to see the light from onboard a train
at that location.
