Has anybody been inside of late. I think it's been closed for a few years now. It seems to be in still good condition apart from the windows being smashed. They've still got the Glasgows (s) miles better sign on the Duke street side. It does look impresive through. Who's got info on it and who owns it now? Would like to explore it.

The ramp was used to lead the animals up for slaughter, you used to hear the cows mooing loudly at around 2am and then pigs squealing at around 3:30am, you could hear the fear in their noises, the sheep where always surprisingly quiet considering what was just about to happen to them. There was a gate at the bottom to stop escapes, but now and again one would get out. I still the remember the smell from the place.

I actually find it slightly strange that until so recently the slaughterhouse was still operational!! Its not something you really expect to find in a city...

Maybe it was a good thing at the time (for it to be in the city) It strikes me that so few people have any contact and knowledge of the animals they eat (or indeed any animals), that removing this step in the process from the views of the city folks just leaves people further removed from the reality of what they eat, and results in the over sentimentalisation and humanisation of animals. Which is of course much talked about it the ongoing country versus town folks debates of latter years.

Of course, that said it may have been the exact opposite and i wouldn't have fancied living next to it whilst it was operational...the smell....ugh!

But at least while it was visible people would still be aware that beef doesn't come from the purple or green polstyrene beasties!!!

Got into the old slaughter house ?? No way !!

What kinda of a lunatic would have the b--ls to do something like that Fossy ?

I guess it's just another location we can't claim to have explored before it's gone for ever. :-(

When did it actually cease to be?

Admittedly not something particularly new, but not that old, I was surprised when I had a closer look at the exterior to see that it had nice shiney stainless steel controlled access/intercom panels fitted to some of the external access routes, though I think you'd be hard pressed to find an unbroken window.

Pity about the asbestos, otherwise it would be a nice place to go and have a quiet 'word' or two with some of Glasgow's officialdom. they could be left to 'hang around' and consider the folly of their ways.

David Cronenberg could direct the documentary (Crimewatch re-enactment?) later

I see the bulldozers have started to demolish the place. Can't say I'll be sorry to see it go, it was an 1960s monstrosity. Hopefully whatever replaces it will make a positive contribution to the city.

What is the Glasgow alternative nowadays to this abattoir?
